More honors for Women of Troy

IGCA and INA release All-State Basketball picks

IOWA CITY– The Iowa Girls Coaches Association (IGCA) and the Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) recently released their All-State Girls Basketball Teams in the wake of the 2017 state tournaments.
Iowa City West High’s Logan Cook and Rachel Saunders were selected by the organizations with Cook earning IGCA All State Second Team and INA First Team honors while Saunders was a Third Team pick for both the IGCA and the INA.
Cook led the Women of Troy with 375 points, averaging 16 points per game while Saunders put up 272 points with an average of 12.4 per game.

Three Clippers earn WaMaC All-Conference honors

TIFFIN– Three varsity boys from Clear Creek Amana (CCA) earned spots on the 2016-17 WaMaC All-Conference West Division Teams.
Tate Thomsen, Cory Siders and Tyler Hallett, all seniors, were selected among player from across the division. Thomsen was named to the Second Team with Siders and Hallett earning Honorable Mention.

DES MOINES– They were on a mission, and the mission was accomplished.
“This has been our goal since the beginning,” Connor McCaffery said in postgame comments Saturday, March 11, in the interview room at the Wells Fargo Arena in downtown Des Moines after the West High Trojans knocked off defending State Class 4A champions West Des Moines Valley, 64-50, to claim the title. The Valley High Tigers denied the Trojans the championship last year by defeating West, 46-39.

LWVJC Legislative Forum at South Slope March 25

NORTH LIBERTY– The League of Women Voters Johnson County invites the public to attend a legislative forum Saturday, March 25, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the South Slope Community Center.
The forum provides an opportunity for dialogue between the legislators and their constituents in Johnson County. The legislators will present three-minute summaries of critical issues before their respective houses, particularly those of interest to them. Potential topics include labor, civil rights and housing.

Methodist church offers support group March 22, April 26

NORTH LIBERTY– Struggling with losing someone from death or divorce or separation? Want to talk with someone else who has gone through hard times in their life? If so, come to the First United Methodist Church in North Liberty, 85 N. Jones Blvd., on Wednesday, March 22, at 7 p.m. in the library. Meet with others who are struggling. Anyone over 18 is welcome to attend. Support is free to all.
There will also be a meeting on April 26.

Mission trip fundraiser at Pizza Ranch March 20

NORTH LIBERTY– Members of Grace Community Church will be waiting tables Monday, March 20, from 5-8 p.m. at Pizza Ranch, 395 Beaver Kreek Ctr., to raise funds for a mission trip to Guatemala. A percentage of sales will go to the team, as well as all tips received from patrons.

NL student named State Bee semifinalis

NORTH LIBERTY– Christian Montover, a seventh grader at North Central Junior High, has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2017 Iowa National Geographic State Bee. The contest will be held at the University of Northern Iowa, Maucker Union on Friday, March 31.
Montover is the son of Sarah and Doug Goettsch, and Nathan and Kim Montover.

CCA board looks at changes to new elementary

Many points to ponderahead of September vote

TIFFIN– Once again the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School Board of Directors finds itselfs pondering “brick and mortar” as a September bond referendum looms ever larger on the horizon.
Voters in the district will be asked to approve a $35 million bond issue for several construction projects including a new elementary school to help with overcrowding, which is forecast to hit both Tiffin Elementary and North Bend Elementary. All indications point to the new school being built on the east side of Tiffin adjacent to Tiffin Elementary.
