2016 CCA softball preview

Quintet of seniors to lead Clippers on the diamond

OXFORD– Five seniors will lead the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers’ varsity girls softball team this season. Skylar Hop, Jacquelyn Fairholm, Courtney James, Megan Beckler and Brooke Henze are the quintet of veterans coach Barb Lynn will rely on heavily.
Lynn, in her third year with the Creek Girls, led the squad to a 22-17 record overall last season. CCA was 14-8 in WaMaC conference play and 12-6 in West Division action.

CCA girls earn second WaMaC championship in a tough week

TIFFIN– It was a rough week to be a Creek Girl despite a major triumph. The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers won three out of six matches for a 12-4 record heading into the end of the regular season.

Women of Troy tame the tennis Tigers

IOWA CITY– The Women of Troy defeated Cedar Falls 7-2 Thursday, May 12, at home to close out the regular tennis season on a winning note. Emma Koch, Kaily Speer, Simran Sarin, Vivian Mitchell and Meg Moreland put up individual wins while Koch and Mitchell and Sarin and Lauren Katz were doubles winners for West.
West finished the regular season 10-4 overall and 9-4 in conference play to earn second place in the Mississippi Valley Conference’s (MVC) Valley Division.

Clippers send a baker’s dozen events to State Co-Ed Track and Field Meet

MOUNT PLEASANT– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys track and field team took second place in their district Thursday, May 12, in a Class 3A state qualifying meet at Mount Pleasant. The host Panthers took the district championship with 157 team points followed by the Creek Boys’ 130.

Trojans place fourth at CRANDIC JV Meet

Greiner, Bourges win in 1,600 run and 110 hurdles

IOWA CITY– West High’s Trojan track and field team finished one point behind City High for fourth-place in the 2016 CRANDIC Boys Junior Varsity Meet Monday, May 2, at City High’s Raffensperger Track. Cedar Rapids Jefferson won the meet with 114 points, followed by Cedar Rapids Kennedy with 111 and the Little Hawks with 86. West High had 85 team points.

West shuts out Golden Eagles

Trojans defeat Dubuque Wahlert, 7-0 on Senior Night

IOWA CITY– Soggy conditions on their own pitch led the West High Trojans down the hill to Trojan Field Tuesday, May 10, as the Golden Eagles of Dubuque Wahlert visited for Senior Night. The Trojans shutout Wahlert, 7-0, to improve to 13-1 on the season and dropped Wahlert to 5-6-1.

Tennis Trojans are District Champs

Jung earns solo title

IOWA CITY– Jiung Jung is headed to the State High School Individual State Tennis Meet after earning the district championship Thursday, May 12, on the University of Iowa’s Kltoz Courts in Iowa City.
Jung, a junior, defeated City High’s Gabe Weigel 6-1 and 6-0 before knocking off Bettendorf’s Fritzy Swearingen 6-0 and 6-0 in the semifinal round. Jung faced City High’s Joe Hoff and put him away 6-2 and 7-5.

Welch, Haight and Dusterhoft lead West girls to State Co-ed Meet

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High will be well represented at the 2016 State Co-ed Track and Field Meet in Des Moines. The Women of Troy will send 11 events while the Trojans will make their presence known on the blue track with 14 events. The West athletes qualified Thursday, May 12, at home in a Class 4A state qualifying meet with the winner and runner-up automatically earning the trip to Des Moines while others qualified on time/performance.

Volunteer firefighters needed

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Volunteer Fire Department (NLVFD) is seeking individuals over the age of 18, who live or work in Penn or Madison Townships (this includes all of North Liberty and some surrounding area), to serve as volunteer firefighters. The NLVFD is currently seeking those available weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Address questions to Chief Eric Vandewater or Asst. Chief Bryan Hardin. Applications are also available on the fire department’s website at www.nlfire.org/recruitment.html. Materials submitted for application are not returned.

Volunteers needed for Free Lunch and Fun

NORTH LIBERTY– Gearing up for the third year in operation, the Summer Lunch and Fun Program is seeking participation from local restaurants and others to provide free food and activities for North Liberty youth. No registration required.
The program is for all youth up to 18 years old, weekdays from June 6 to Aug. 12 (no July 4) at the Ranshaw House, located just north of the North Liberty Community Center on Community Drive. Lunch is 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. with an activity following from 12-1 p.m.
