NORTH LIBERTY– The Liberty High School varsity boys’ basketball team was tested in battle, they’ve grown, and they’re working on becoming a force to be reckoned with in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC). The Lightning are starting their third season of varsity competition with Head Coach Stu Ordman.

North Scott and City High are No.1 in preseason basketball rankings

NORTH LIBERTY– The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) released its 2019-20 preseason girls basketball rankings on Friday, Nov. 22, for all five classes.
Neither Class 4A Clear Creek Amana (CCA), nor 5A Liberty High made it into the listing of the top-15 teams across the state.

Liberty’s Lauren Strauser to bowl for Trojans

2019-2020 Iowa City West High girls bowling preview

IOWA CITY– Liberty High senior Lauren Strauser will be the sole Bolt on the Iowa City West High girls bowling team this season. Liberty bowlers and swimmers have competed with West High in shared programs since Liberty’s founding.
Mike Mellecker is the coach for the Women of Troy (Mellecker also coaches the boys’ team) with a 68-129 career record. West High went 3-18 last season.

Nine Bolts and three Boats will bowl for the Trojans

IOWA CITY– Nine Liberty High School student athletes and three from Clear Creek Amana (CCA) will join the Iowa City West High’s boys bowling team this season. The Bolts (Liberty Lightning) and Boats (CCA Clippers) join 13 West High Trojans.
Mike Mellecker is the coach for the Trojans (Mellecker also coaches the girls’ team, as well) with a 69-110 career record. West High went 8-14 last season.

Heartache at the UNI-Dome

Spartans upended by Bobcats, 37-17, in 3A title game

CEDAR FALLS– Some stories end in joyous celebration, others reinforce resolve.
The Spartans, arguably one of the smallest Class 3A school football teams, entered the UNI-Dome on Thursday evening, Nov. 21, sporting a record of 12-0 to meet an equally tested adversary, one of the largest Class 3A teams, in the Western Dubuque Epworth Bobcats. Someone would have to leave without a perfect season.
Although the Spartans battled for 48 minutes, they failed to “Check the Final Box,” as the pole barn proverb south of town beckoned.
The Spartans fell before a very disciplined Bobcat team, 37-17.

NORTH LIBERTY– Forget hibernating and embrace winter. North Liberty’s Beat the Bitter is back with a week full of activities to get you out of the house for outdoor winter games and good cheer. Brighten up the bleakest days of the year in the tundra of North Liberty Jan. 25 through Feb. 1, 2020. Registration is open at beatthebitter.com.
The festival offers events for all ages, it is a week full of winter cheer for everyone. Highlights include the Igloo Jam concert, the Snuggie Crawl, free family fun at Fire and Ice, the 5K-ish Obstacle Run and kickball, curling and broomball tournaments.

The changing of the guard

New voices and new roles for CCA school board

OXFORD– It was the changing of the guard Tuesday, Nov. 19, for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District’s School Board of Directors as Steve Swenka and Terry Davis departed at the end of their terms, and Eileen Schmidt and Jeff Tackaberry joined the seven-member board.

MPO of Johnson County unveils bike plans at public meeting

NORTH LIBERTY– About a dozen or so people took a first-hand look at future plans for bicycle trails in the Iowa City, Coralville, Tiffin and North Liberty area at a public meeting held by the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) of Johnson County on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Van Allen Elementary School in North Liberty.

Council approves deal with Pattison for 120 W. Main St. City approves first of competing offers

SOLON– City council members selected the proposal that was ready to roll.
Citing financial and legal readiness, the city approved selling an empty lot next door to City Hall to developer Mark Pattison during a Nov. 20 council meeting.
North Corridor Properites Investments will take possession of 120 W. Main St. in December and begin construction on a two-story mixed-use building with two commercial units on the ground level and a single, upper-level residence.
The city considered a competing offer from Uptown Main LLC, represented by developer Al Wells.
