Creek Boys rock the mats at Regina

CCA defeats Lone Tree, HLV and IC Regina

IOWA CITY– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity wrestlers improved to 7-7 in dual meets, including a 7-3 showing since the start of 2018, with a quad meet sweep Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Iowa City Regina against the Regals, Lone Tree and Hartwick-Ladora-Victor (HLV).

Trojans wipe out Warriors

IC West soaks CR Washington, 122-53

CORALVILLE– Iowa City West High’s boys swim team celebrated Senior Night Tuesday, Jan. 9, at home (Coralville Recreation Center) with a pair of wins over the Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors.
West High’s varsity washed the Warriors away, 122-53, while the junior varsity (JV) crew took a 114-55 win.
Varsity individual winners included Lane Griffis (200- and 500-yard freestyle events), Izaak Hajek (200-yard individual medley (IM) and 100-yard butterfly), Brennon Keen (50-yard freestyle) and Ben Berhow (100-yard breaststroke).

West’s Rosenthal a Coach of the Year

IOWA CITY– The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association recently announced selecting 23 coaches from around the country as 2017 Coaches of the Year. Iowa City West High’s head girls’ soccer coach, David Rosenthal, was among the honorees.
Rosenthal, a native of Waterville, Maine, has been at West High for 24 years as a Spanish teacher and has coached for 23 years after attending the University of Iowa for graduate school and student teaching at West.

Mount Pleasant lights up Liberty, 76-51

NORTH LIBERTY– A two-game winning streak for the Liberty High varsity boys basketball team ended Tuesday, Jan. 9, at home as the Mount Pleasant Panthers took a 76-51 victory. The Liberty Lightning, aka “The Bolts,” were basking in the glow of a Saturday, Jan. 6, win over Clear Creek Amana. The Bolts had made a strong second half effort in the 58-45 victory.

Creek Girls roll past Indee

CCA earns sixth consecutive win, 60-33, at Indee

INDEPENDENCE– P.J. Sweeney and his Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls varsity basketball team notched their sixth consecutive win Tuesday, Jan. 9, on the road in Independence, 60-33, against the Mustangs.
Karsyn Stratton, a sophomore, led the attack with 20 points for CCA as the Clippers dominated throughout the contest. The Creek Girls took the first period 18-6 and held off a 15-point rally from the Mustangs in the second period to hold a 27-21-halftime lead. The Clippers pounded Indee 21-4 in the third for a 48-25 lead going into the final quarter.

Big first half propels Marion past Clear Creek Amana, 60-37

MARION– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) head coach Brandon Clubb summed up his team’s performance on the road Friday, Jan. 12, in Marion in just two words.
“No defense.”
The Clippers suffered their fourth consecutive loss to the Indians, falling 60-37, and dropping their record to 2-9. The Indians, on the other hand, improved their lot in life to a 5-6 showing while snapping a three-game losing streak.

J-Hawks sweep the lanes against Trojans

Stark, Mohr, Little and Strauser lead West High against CR Jefferson

CEDAR RAPIDS– Iowa City West High’s bowling squads all fell to the J-Hawks of Cedar Rapids Jefferson Friday, Jan. 12, at May City Bowling in Cedar Rapids.
The J-Hawk varsity girls defeated the Women of Troy 2,705 to 2,387, with Jefferson’s Aryana Benesh winning with 394 while West High’s Alexie Little led the Trojans with 378. Jefferson’s junior varsity (JV) girls won 2,335 to 1,423, with the J-Hawks’ Becca Moffatt winning with 337 while West’s Lauren Strauser led with 205.

Indee Mustangs ride away from Creek Boys

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys basketball team dropped to 2-8 Tuesday, Jan. 8, with a 72-66 loss at home to the Mustangs of Independence.
The Mustangs put the Creek Boys in a 13-6 hole at the end of the first period and extended their lead to 33-27 at halftime despite a second-quarter rally by the Clippers. The momentum shifted in the third period as Brandon Clubb’s crew battled to a 57-50 advantage going into the final eight minutes. The Mustangs, however, rallied back for the win.

Waverly-Shell Rock defeats Liberty, 52-32

Go Hawks make it a no-go for the Lightning girls

WAVERLY– The “Go Hawks” of Waverly-Shell Rock kept the Liberty High varsity girls basketball team searching for its first win of 2018 with a 52-32 loss Friday, Jan. 12, in Waverly.
The Lightning lagged behind early as the Go Hawks took a 14-5 lead at the end of the first period and were ahead 20-12 at halftime. Liberty trailed 36-23 going into the final quarter, which was their brightest of the night with a 12-point effort, however the Go Hawks’ 16-points carried them to victory.

West overhauls CR Warriors, 72-50

Women of Troy wallop the Warriors

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy posted their sixth consecutive win Friday, Jan. 12, at home with a 72-50 pounding of Cedar Rapids Washington’s Warriors.
The first period was a back and forth battle with the Warriors edging out West High 9-8, but the momentum quickly shifted in the second with B.J. Mayer’s Women of Troy blasting the Warriors 19-8 for a 27-17 halftime lead. West outscored Washington 22-20 in the third on its way to the 22-point advantage at the end.
