Assistant Scott Sanders takes over Women of Troy volleyball

IOWA CITY– Change came to Iowa City West High’s varsity volleyball program. Randy Dolson resigned the head coach position in order to lead the fledgling Liberty High Lightning in North Liberty. Scott Sanders, his assistant, was hired to take over the West program to lead the Women of Troy.
Sanders was assistant coach at Iowa City West High for eight seasons, working with legendary West High coach Kathy “Brez” Bresnahan for five years and the past three for Dolson.
He graduated with 24 classmates from Glidden-Ralston and managed the volleyball team his senior year.

Creek Girls 11th at WaMaC golf Supermeet

Greathouse leads Clippers with 98

SHELLSBURG– The Wildcat Golf Course was the site of the 2017 WaMaC conference golf Supermeet Monday, May 8, where the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls placed 11th out of the 15 teams represented.
Vinton-Shellsburg won the team title with 357, while the Creek Girls put up a total of 409.

Women of Troy defeat the Rams, remain unbeaten

IC West girls soccer wins, 4-0, over Dubuque Senior

DUBUQUE– Iowa City West High’s varsity soccer team remained unbeaten with a 4-0 win over Dubuque Senior in Dubuque Tuesday, May 9. Regan Steigleder led the Women of Troy with a three-goal hat trick. Emma Cooper and Leah Rhodes assisted Steigleder. Steigleder returned the favor and assisted Cooper with a goal in the second half.
West improved to 11-0 overall and 7-0 in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC).

Creek Boys fall in double OT to Raiders

Williamsburg beats CCA, 1-0

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys varsity soccer team dipped to 8-5 overall after the Williamsburg Raiders won, 1-0, in the second overtime period on Tuesday, May 9, in Tiffin.
The Clippers made seven shots on goal, but were unable to get past the Raider’s keeper. CCA keeper Ian McDonald made three saves in the effort. Williamsburg improved to 8-4 overall.
CCA travels to Monticello on Thursday, May 18, to close out the regular season at 4:30 p.m. ahead of substate play and the battle to earn a trip to Des Moines for the state tournament.

Duo to lead the Lightning on the mats

NORTH LIBERTY— Principal and acting Athletic Director Scott Kibby continues to add staff to the roster of Liberty High School in North Liberty, which is set to open in August. Kibby announced via Twitter Thursday, May 11, two more coaches joined the athletic ranks of The Liberty Lightning.
“Co-Head Wrestling coaches have been hired!” Kibby tweeted. “Tom Van Dyke and Joe Williams will be leading the Liberty Lightning Wrestling Team!”

West High qualifies 21 events for state track

Trojans and Women of Troy take team titles

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s girls and boys track and field teams competed in a Class 4A state qualifying meet Thursday, May 11, at City High with the winner and runner-up in each event automatically qualifying for the State Co-Ed Meet. The next eight-best performances, from across the state, also earned a trip to Des Moines.
The Trojans and Women of Troy took Team Championships, with the boys winning with 176 points, just sixteen team points ahead of runner-up Cedar Rapids Kennedy, while the girls won with 190, 59 points ahead of runner-up Cedar Rapids Prairie.

Creek Girls slip past Regals

Bormann breaks tie in OT

IOWA CITY– Sometimes raw statistics can be misleading. On paper, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers’ girls varsity soccer team should have rolled over the Regina Regals, of Iowa City, on Monday, May 8, in a non-conference match-up at Regina. The Regals entered the contest with a 2-6 record to the Creek Girls’ 10-2 showing.

NL filmmaker’s “Sarah Reckmeyer: A Life in Music” to screen at IIFF, May 20-21

AURORA, Ill.– “Sarah Reckmeyer: A Life in Music” was selected to screen at the 2017 Illinois International Film Festival. The festival will take place on May 20-21 at the Prisco Center in Aurora, Ill. The film, directed and produced by Rich Redfern of North Liberty, first aired in August of 2016.

Fourth year of Summer Lunch & Fun Program needs your help

NORTH LIBERTY– Summer is an exciting time for kids: time to play with friends, go to camp, vacation with family, play in pool or at parks. But for children who receive free and reduced-price meals at school, summer can mean hunger. To help bridge that gap, the North Liberty Summer Lunch & Fun Program has operated since 2014 and needs your help this summer.
In 2014, the program served more than 2,500 free meals to youth. In 2015, with food donated by dozens of businesses, individual donors and volunteers, the program served more than 3,900 meals.
