City bests West, 20-7

IOWA CITY– City High keeps “The Boot,” a bronzed boot traveling trophy, for another year. The Little Hawks claimed it from the West High Trojans, 14-12, in last year’s annual battle of the cross-town rivals, and upset the Trojans, 20-7, Friday, Sept. 16, for the right to keep it another year.
City came into the contest ranked 10th in Class 4A with a 2-1 record, while the Trojans were ranked fifth with a 3-0 showing as they took to the gridiron for the rivalry on their Homecoming night.

O’Connor leads the way for CCA runners

OSKALOOSA– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys cross country squad picked up its second team title of the 2016 season with a win Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the Oskaloosa Invitational. The Creek Boys topped the 13-team field with 46 team points, led by freshman Nick O’Connor’s third-place finish in 18:25.6.

Creek Boys 4-0 with blowout win over Cardinals

MAQUOKETA— What a difference a year makes. Last year, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers started the varsity football season with an 0-3 record before finishing 5-5 with a first round loss in the playoffs to Maquoketa. This year, the Creek Boys are 4-0 after a 44-0 blowout win over Maquoketa.
Matt Brimeyer led the Clippers’ ground assault with 111 yards on 15 carries. Brimeyer scored one touchdown on a 19-yard run.
Jared Eckrich found the end zone twice during his six carries for 97 yards. Eckrich scampered 31 yards for one of his two touchdowns.

Mustangs gallop past Creek Girls

Independence wins, 3-0, over CCA

INDEPENDENCE– The Independence Mustangs swept the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers, 3-0, in varsity volleyball action on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Independence. The Mustangs prevailed 25-22, 25-20 and 25-20 to drop the Creek Girls to 8-7 on the season. It was the Clippers’ fourth consecutive match loss following three losses in Iowa City West’s Caroline Found Extravaganza on Saturday, Sept. 10.

Prairie scorches Liberty High football, 53-6

IOWA CITY– Just before the opening kick off Thursday, Sept. 15, at Iowa City West High, Liberty High’s coach Jeff Gordon sounded worried. “They’re good, they’re really good,” he said, nodding across the field at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Hawks.
The Hawks and the Liberty Lightning’s “O (Original) Bolts” clashed in a freshman game, with the Hawks blitzing the Lightning, 53-6.

Clippers vex the Vikettes

CCA defeats Vinton-Shellsburg, 3-1

VINTON– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity volleyball team pulled off a 3-1 win over the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes Thursday, Sept. 15, in Vinton. The Creek Girls took the first set, 25-16, but stumbled in the second set for a 24-26 loss, before taking the third and fourth sets, 25-21 and 25-22.
The Clippers improved to 9-7 and snapped a four-match losing streak.
Shauntina Williams led the Clipper offense with 16 kills. Lauren Helle contributed 10. Zoey Boehme made 23 assists; Riley Hennes had 11 and McKenzie Justice and Hennes made three ace serves apiece. Sheyanne Koethe racked up 34 digs.

Dubuque Wahlert wins, 3-0, over Iowa City West

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy were swept, 3-0, Tuesday, Sept. 13, at home by the Golden Eagles of Dubuque Wahlert in varsity volleyball action. West dropped the first set, 14-25, and though they narrowed the gap in the second and third sets, Wahlert prevailed, 25-19 and 25-21.
Emma Norris led the West offense with a dozen kills, Maddie Fay made 28 assists and Madi Ford had 22 digs. Defensively, Emily Halverson and Fay posted one block assist each.
Mackenzie May led the Golden Eagles with 21 kills.

Rev. Katie Lowe Lancaster installed as Pastor of Discipleship Ministries at Holy Trinity

NORTH LIBERTY– The congregation of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in North Liberty has announced the addition of Pastor Katie Lowe Lancaster to the staff. Pastor Lowe Lancaster will serve as Pastor of Discipleship Ministries, including Small Group Ministries support, Christian Education and Servant ministries within and beyond the community. She was formally installed to the new post on Sunday, Sept. 18.
