Ely First Presbyterian Vacation Bible School

ELY– First Presbyterian Church near Ely invites area children to participate in Vacation Bible School (VBS) every Sunday in June from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., plus a family campout on Saturday night, June 25.

Getting to State: Only half the battle

A strong regional performance is one thing. Solon not only moves up to Class 3A this season, but has to battle seven other regional champions, as well as the rest of the field for points at State. Tops in the field may be Dubuque Wahlert. Mount Vernon-Lisbon is the defending Class 3A champ, though Solon has beaten them a couple of times. “They have some of the top individuals and relays; they can count on scoring high. They have the experienced runners that are used to being there,” noted Solon Coach Brent Sands.

Housing Accessibility Project to make ramps available

IOWA CITY– Johnson County Livable Community has launched HAP (Housing Accessibility Project) with a mission to provide access to homes in Johnson County, in an affordable, timely manner. The major focus of HAP is the construction of ramps. Making minor repairs for safety or adding safety features like grab bars or handrails will be considered on a case by case basis. Mobile homes however are eligible for ramps only.
The major partners in the coalition are: Access2Independence, Carpenters Local 1260, Elder Services Inc. and Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity.

North Bend, North Central students and staff plant trees for energy efficiency

NORTH LIBERTY– “It blows out here even when the wind isn’t blowing,” said North Bend Elementary Principal Brenda Parker as she looked toward the expanse north and west of the Clear Creek Amana school in North Liberty. In the winter, strong northwest winds buffet the school building and often fill the faculty parking lot with snow.
But, thanks to a unique partnership and a little effort on the part of the students and staff, relief should be coming within the next few years.

Cooper steps down

IOWA CITY– It was a short announcement at the very end of the school board meeting, but it could have a long-term effect on the board’s future decisions.
Board member Mike Cooper announced during the final moments of the Iowa City school board meeting Tuesday that he will be stepping down effective June 30.
Cooper, Vice President of National Services for Pearson, said he would still be able to maintain his current position while moving to Minneapolis to spend more time with family members who live there.

A greater shelf life

NORTH LIBERTY– Sometimes, families need a little help.
Other times, that little bit of help may be all that gets them through.
Since 1985, the North Liberty Community Food and Clothing Pantry has served as a bridge to carry people from struggles to sustenance, possibly the difference between going hungry and the ability to keep going. It began, literally, in a closet at the North Liberty United Methodist Church, as a response to requests from about 15 to 20 families in need of food and clothing.

Family Night at NL Library Sunday, May 22

NORTH LIBERTY– Join the North Liberty Community Library staff for a Family Fun Night featuring food, games and a silent auction on Sunday, May 22, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the North Liberty Community Center. Rain, stay away from Fun Days

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Fun Days is back!
The fun-packed weekend is back on schedule, the parade is back on Dubuque Street and, hopefully, the non-profit organizations that count on Fun Days as their prime fundraising opportunity will be back in the black.
The annual community event, to be held June 9-12, is in its 34th year, and organizers have made some changes, tweaked a couple of the traditions and took a few money-saving steps, all in an effort to keep Fun Days vibrant and alive.

JCHT annual Family Day at Turkey Creek May 22

JOHNSON COUNTY– Bring the family and join the fun– rain or shine– at Johnson County Heritage Trust’s (JCHT) Family Day at Turkey Creek, Sunday, May 22, from 1-3 p.m.

Liberty Centre Blues & BBQ is five years old this month

NORTH LIBERTY– To properly celebrate a landmark birthday of North Liberty’s annual summer kick-off, Liberty Centre Blues & BBQ welcomes back blues headliner Bob Dorr and the Blue Band, Iowa’s consummate blues entertainers, who are also celebrating the band’s 30th anniversary.
We still have spots available for party volunteers. If you haven’t signed up yet, you are going to want to get in on this! We’ve got goodies for all our volunteers, so respond now. Really, it’s a blast.
