Hawks play hard, despite loss

IOWA CITY– I didn’t have a good feeling when the Hawkeye men traveled to East Lansing last Wednesday.
They haven’t won there since Matt Gatens was 5. Last year, the Spartans jumped out to a 20-1 lead and coasted to a 66-52 win.
Iowa did have one of the great upsets of the year when they beat Michigan State, 43-36, in Iowa City last season.
I was just hoping the Hawks wouldn’t lose by 20.
They didn’t, and the 62-54 loss was played hard from start to finish.
Every time Iowa would make a run, the Spartans would answer.

Hawk Women Will Be NCAA Host

IOWA CITY– By winning their final two games of the regular season last week, the Hawkeyes assured themselves of being the host team for the NCAA tournament March 22-24 at Carver.
The Hawkeyes finished with the same record they had last year, 20-9 (13-5 in the Big Ten). They were co-Big Ten Champs last season, but this year they tied for second place with Purdue and Michigan State.
It was Senior Night for the Hawkeye women last Thursday.
Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said at her press conference if things work out all five seniors, including Nicole VanderPol, would be on the court one last time.

JOHNSON COUNTY– The discussion continues surrounding the growth and development plan for rural Johnson County.
Proposed changes to the North Corridor portion of the Johnson County Land Use Plan could impact rural property owners if they wish to develop land in the future.

A new look? CCA considers branding idea

TIFFIN –Ray Willoughby, Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School District’s Construction Manager, typically gives a briefing on the progress of the construction projects to the board during their monthly meeting. On Wednesday, Feb. 18, the Facility Oversight Task Force gave the board a presentation on, well…presentation.

Conflict of interest still up for debate

NORTH LIBERTY– How much of an interest constitutes a conflict?
The North Liberty City Council will try to find some consensus on the matter.
Last month, council members learned that one of the project engineers from McClure Engineering– the lead engineering firm in a re-design of Highway 965– is also part owner of property along the highway.

Council says no loan for KinderWorld

NORTH LIBERTY– A long-established North Liberty day care center will relocate, likely with some financial assistance from the city.
It just wasn’t as much as she hoped.
The owner of KinderWorld Learning and Childcare Center, which has been housed in a building on site of the Ranshaw House for over 25 years, was informed she would have to move her child care operation when the city purchased the Penn Street property in 2004 for $650,000. Since then, KinderWorld owner Missy Butcher-Evans has been renting the daycare space from the city.

Walkin'

At first I learned of the News Agency through stories Dad brought home.
Since the yarns came from Dad– no stranger to telling a whopper just for the heck of it– I had no way of knowing the accuracy of anything he told me.

Guest Opinion from the Iowa House

The greatest challenges facing the 83rd General Assembly are balancing the budget during a severe recession and providing disaster relief to hard hit counties in Iowa. These issues notwithstanding, there is a better way to do government business.
