FORT DODGE– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School’s Brandon Barker, Gavin Zillyette and Haidyn Barker competed in the 2020 Class 3A State Cross Country Championships Friday, Oct. 30, at the Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.
Dallas Center-Grimes won the boys 3A title with the Clippers’ WaMaC East rival Solon taking the runner-up spot. The Clippers were the defending runner-up squad after two consecutive years.
Barker, a senior, finished ninth in 16:36.6 while Zillyette, a junior, was 22nd in 16:58.3.
Haidyn Barker, a sophomore, was 33rd in the girls race in 20:11.9.

SOLON– Lori Lacina, of Solon, published her second book titled
“Extra Sprinkles- More Reflections From the Heartland.” It is a compilation of stories about life in Iowa and humorous incidents sprinkled with some inspiration for readers.
It is a follow-up of sorts to her first book, which was 366 daily readings, “Mama Said There’d Be Days Like These- Reflections From the Heartland.”

SOLON– In some ways, the Solon Community School District (SCSD) was ahead of the COVID-19 curve.
Solon was already exploring blended learning before the pandemic struck in 2020, Superintendent Davis Eidahl explained at an Oct. 15 school board meeting.
The initiative started two years ago in sixth-12th-grade math departments as part of the SCSD strategic plan goal of having 95 percent of students proficient in reading, writing, math and science, Eidahl explained.

TIFFIN– Amid the near-constant drumbeat of social distancing, and guidelines for safe trick-or-treating in the year of the COVID-19 virus, Infuse Church devised a way for the community to celebrate Halloween without the need to go door-to-door.
The church held a trick-or-treat parade Saturday, Oct. 31, (Halloween), which featured the Tiffin Fire Department and a few local businesses distributing candy along a parade route encircling the north side of Tiffin.
The church meets on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. at Tiffin Elementary School.

MOUNT VERNON– At the end of the first game, Mount Vernon had just dominated Solon for a 25-10 win.
Head Coach Jeff Walker didn’t have a particular message for his team.
“(I) just told them that game’s over and this is a new game,” he reported.
Solon’s varsity volleyball team responded and fought back gamely, but the Mustangs withstood the storm and took the second game, 25-23. Third-ranked (Class 3A) Mount Vernon rolled on to a 25-15 third-set win and ended the season for the Spartans in a Region 7 road quarterfinal Oct. 19.
