County to amend code to address home businesses

JOHNSON COUNTY– In October, the extensions on conditional use permits for Dick Schwab’s Celebration Barn and Mary Ellen Hill’s Gazebo on the Green will end.
The attention garnered by the two rural business ventures in this corner of Johnson County has had people wondering; what’s acceptable practice when carrying out a business in the unincorporated areas of the county?
For most, the answer lies somewhere in the county’s written code. For these two businesses, with their unique services offered in distinctive settings, the code lacks clarity.

Rasmussen running solo for mayor

SOLON– Of the four elected city posts to be decided this November, only one will involve a contested race.
Incumbent Mark Krall, appointed to fill a vacated term, will face Chuck Panzer for a two-year term on the Solon City Council.
Two other council seats, both four-year terms, will be sought by Ron Herdliska and incumbent Brad Kunkel.
Council member Cami Rasmussen is the only candidate for mayor in the Nov. 8 general election, seeking to replace Rick Jedlicka, who announced last month he would not seek another term.

Field position turns after events center turf battle

SOLON– Solon sports are in the limelight, especially football. The teams have a target on their backs– everybody wants to take down the Spartans this year.
But that doesn’t explain the field position of the stadium that the four-time state champ football squad will play in next year.
Solon’s proposed Outdoor Events Center (OEC) is looking at a fierce opponent—time. A lack of funds may force the school board into making some tough calls in the next few months.

Scouting for Food ends Saturday

SOLON– Solon Cub Scout Pack 120 has started its annual Scouting for Food drive. During last year’s food drive, Solon Cub Scouts collected and delivered over 2,200 pounds of donated goods for the Iowa City Crisis Center. The goal is to reach 2,500 pounds of food this year. Be looking for local Cub Scouts from Pack 120 to hang a plastic grocery bag on your doorknob by this Thursday. If you are able to participate, please fill plastic grocery bags with non-perishable food items and leave outside your front door by 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Trapshooting team hosting fundraiser for Brett Smith

The sporting facility is located at 3127 160th St., Riverside, and will be hosted by coaches and teammates of the high school trapshooting team of which Brett Smith is a founding member.
The cost is $50 per participant and the 100-target Sporting Clays shoot starts at 8 a.m., with the last group out at 3 p.m.

Upcoming display windows

One very big attraction at the Solon Library is the lovely display window designed by Toni Russo. The next display, entitled, “A Reel In-Tents Experience” will be dedicated to long-time Solon resident, Earl Miller. Toni is looking for some items to help complete the window, particularly old items, including binoculars, a thermos, compasses, Girl & Boy Scout small item memorabilia, campfire items and fishing items found within a boat, i.e., tackle, boots and dip net.

Book Club

Listed as number seven in the eastern Iowans best sellers list this week is “Zeitoun” by Dave Eggers. This book is also the One Community, One Book selection and has been or will be discussed at other area libraries as well as our own. The Solon Area Book Club will meet Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m. and will be discussing this selection. The Book Club welcomes adults who wish to join in for just one discussion as well as new memberships.  The library will be borrowing extra copies for those who will be participating in this discussion.
