Knight Prairie hike at F.W. Kent Park August 11

OXFORD– The majority of the State of Iowa was once covered by tall grass prairies. Today, little remains of these magnificent ecosystems. The Johnson County Conservation Board is trying to change that by protecting remnant prairies and restoring some of the native vegetation that was found in the Iowa prairies, as well as restoring associated animal communities. Dave Wehde, Vegetation Specialist for the Johnson County Conservation Board and other staff will be on hand to lead an informative hike around the Knight Prairie at F.W. Kent Park.

Miracles in Motion tack sale benefit

SWISHER– Miracles in Motion is holding an equine tack and Breyer horse sale at the Swisher farm on Saturday, August 13, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. All proceeds benefit Miracles in Motion, a therapeutic horseback riding facility for people with disabilities. Miracles in Motion is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Food For Thought

When I was in high school, there were few hard and fast rules that covered everything in our family. I had one sister five-years older than I was, and one two–years younger, plus Ruthie who was much younger. It didn’t take me long to figure out that what applied to Dorothy (the oldest), didn’t necessarily apply to me or to Betty. There were times when what rules there seemed to be came across as arbitrary and inconsistent and I had a strong suspicion that it was Mother’s or Dad’s mood or convenience that dictated what was or was not allowed.

Bachman and five monkeys

Before getting to my main topic I’d like to ask any readers out there if they can answer this question: how is it that presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann can keep a straight face while she claims that her spouse’s actions should be off limits, while at the same time she continues to take pot shots at Michelle Obama?
And now onto the main topic...

Thomas Fisher Sr.

Thomas M. Fisher Sr., 65, died Thursday, July 28, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a lingering illness. Services were held after visitation, on August 1 at Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine, by Pastor Jay Eberly of Spirit of Faith Family Church in Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy; son, Tom Jr. of Forest City, Ark.; daughters, Lee Ann (Matt) Slaymaker of North Liberty and Billie Jo (David) Zhorne of Okinawa, Japan; sisters, Sharon (Ron) Buskirk of Waterloo, Ill., and Ellen (Ken) Baker of Marshalltown; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Rev. Robert B. Haight

SOLON– The Rev. Robert (Bob) B. Haight died suddenly in his Solon home after a valiant three-and-a-half year battle with a rare form of thyroid cancer.
He grew up on a farm northeast of Waterloo, the son of Lee G. and Marjorie May Haight (who have both predeceased him), and attended high school in Denver, Iowa.
