May 7th

Food For Thought

May has way too much going for it, especially if you have a child in school. There are May Day, Mother’s Day, proms, sports award ceremonies, graduations, track meets, school programs, concerts and plays. (Do schools still have class picnics and senior skip-day?) And, in my family, there were birthdays to celebrate. Those birthdays were at the top of the list because they are personal celebrations for individuals rather than holidays for everyone or days set aside for large groups of people.

Basketball wrap-up

The Hawkeye men’s basketball team finally did something it hasn’t done in four years... have a winning record.
Four straight losing seasons were tough to deal with for a Hawkeye fan like me who has been following them since the mid ‘60s.
Iowa finished with an 18-17 record, won a Big Ten tournament game and an NIT game.
I had a chance to sit down with assistant coach Sherman Dillard last week to talk about last season, the players coming back and the new recruits.

Back to school?

Solon Economist
SOLON– Credit classes in the summer at Solon High School are on the table for a school board vote. Classes will start no earlier than June 1 and go no later than Aug. 15.
“We don’t know if students will sign up,” Solon High School Principal Nathan Wear flatly told the board last week. He said they’d need only 12 students to make it worthwhile.
The classes will have 16 days and 126 hours of instruction from teachers.
