City leaf pickup to begin next Monday

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty’s street department will be doing curbside leaf pickup on March 26 and April 2 and 9.
Leaves must be between the sidewalk and curb or within two feet of the edge of the street by 7 a.m. on the days listed above. No sticks, branches, yard waste or any other materials should be mixed with the leaves. Brush or garden waste may be bundled for pickup on your regular trash day. Each Monday morning, the public works staff will begin picking up leaves at 7 a.m. until all the streets have been checked once.

We Run: for fun, fitness, life

By Lori Lindner
North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– When Brian Tharp began to run, he was literally running for his life.
In 2008, after historic floods hit Eastern Iowa, Brian’s electric contracting company was bombarded with work; jobs that involved long hours, seven-day work weeks and a lot of physical labor. Since Brian is the type of supervisor to jump in and help with whatever his workers are facing, he also found himself knee-deep in the recovery effort for a solid year.
The problem was, at 360 pounds, his knees weren’t what they used to be.

New leadership for Women of Troy on the tennis court

IOWA CITY– Rich Redfern has taken charge of the Iowa City West High girl’s tennis team for the 2012 season. Redfern inherits a squad that went 13-0 in the MVC and 20-1 overall last year, and will be assisted by Erika Mundt.

not so much

At last Wednesday’s Solon City Council meeting, council member Ron Herdliska asked if the burning of yard waste had been a problem.
“Yes,” answered fellow member Brad Kunkel.
“No,” responded residents Sue Ballantyne and Karen Jensen from the audience.
And that just about covers it.
Kunkel has been pushing to ban the burning of yard and garden waste, hoping instead to expand the city’s curbside leaf collection to include tomato vines and dead annuals.

Food For Thought

I don’t seem to fit the sociological assumption that women are society’s nurturers (at least not of late). I’ve spent nearly all of my adult life nurturing. I’m tired of nurturing. My nurturing batteries have run down and can’t be recharged. Nurturing is a cozy and high-sounding word but I wonder how many people understand what it entails.
