Two arrested in North Liberty after breaking into wrong home

NORTH LIBERTY– Police arrested two suspects for allegedly breaking into a North Liberty residence during the evening hours Tuesday, April 4.
According to the complaint, North Liberty police responded to a residence on Whipple Court around 7 p.m. after receiving a report from a homeowner that someone had entered a back window well. Officers determined that 18-year-old Sammy I. Hamed of Coralville was attempting to gain entry into the wrong residence. Reports state that 19-year-old Mohamed A. Elsemeih, a resident of Whipple Court in North Liberty, stood by as Hamed broke in.

NORTH LIBERTY–North Liberty Blues & BBQ announced Veridian Credit Union will partner to present North Liberty’s annual premiere family event in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Along with the new partnership, organizers are excited to unveil the festival’s new logo.
“North Liberty Blues & BBQ has become an exciting summer tradition that brings our community together,” said Jennifer Roberts, a spokesperson for Veridian. “We’re grateful to the city, countless businesses and hundreds of volunteers that make this event possible, and we’re proud to be a partner in its success.”

North Liberty man calls in false robbery to evade police

NORTH LIBERTY– A North Liberty man allegedly called in a fake report in order to avoid being pulled over last week.
According to complaints, police observed a Ford Taurus being driven along Penn Street around 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, and recognized the driver as Bryce J. Wagehoft, who was barred from driving. In an attempt to divert the officer, Wagehoft then called 911 and reported an armed robbery in progress at a local convenience store. He even gave a description of a made-up suspect before hanging up, according to reports.

EGG-FREE FUN FOR ALL

NORTH LIBERTY– Outside, finally.
After two consecutive years of packing the North Liberty Recreation Center gyms with candy, kids and their parents, the city’s annual Easter egg hunt was graced with nice weather.
“It was great to be outdoors for a welcome change,” said North Liberty Recreation Director Shelly Simpson.
While the event is usually in March, a later Easter holiday pushed the egg hunt (a misnomer, as no eggs are involved) to April, and– consequently– warmer, dryer conditions.

Early voting in progress at Johnson County Auditor’s Office

NORTH LIBERTY– Early voting for the April 25 North Liberty special election will begin Monday, April 10. Voting will be available at the Johnson County Auditor’s Office, 913 S. Dubuque St., Iowa City, from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through the close of business Monday, April 24.
The auditor’s office will also have a satellite voting site at the North Liberty Community Library, 520 W. Cherry St., on Saturday, April 22, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Candidate forum April 17 at North Liberty Community Library

NORTH LIBERTY– With North Liberty’s special election for both mayor and city council set to take place in just two more weeks, residents deserve an opportunity to ask questions and hear from all the candidates.
For that reason, the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce is working in conjunction with various area groups to host a candidate forum. The forum will take place 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 17, in the North Liberty Community Library meeting rooms. It is open to the public.

Airplane crash near Oxford claims two lives

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to work on the investigation of a small airplane crash that claimed two lives Friday, April 7, west of Iowa City.
The plane involved in the crash was a single engine, 1965 Piper Cherokee 180 that originated from the Greencastle Airport west of North Liberty. According to the sheriff’s office, the Joint Emergency Communications Center received a report of a plane crash near 2383 IWV Rd. SW in rural Johnson County at approximately 3:08 p.m. April 7.

Solon ties for 10th at Iowa City West

IOWA CITY– The Solon Spartans joined a field of 13 teams competing on Saturday, April 8, as the gray skies plaguing much of the month of March gave way to a radiant, sunny April day thrusting the boys’ track outdoor season into the spring. The teams converged on the track and field at Iowa City’s West High School for the Hollingsworth Relays.

Ira wins 110-meter hurdles

WILLIAMSBURG – The Solon boys braved another gray, blustery, cool day in the fledgling track and field season on Tuesday, April 4, to finish in sixth place at the Williamsburg Co-Ed. Relays. Originally scheduled for Monday, April 3, the event was postponed until Tuesday due to heavy rains.
The athletes and spectators alike had to dodge mud holes and puddles while making their way between the throwers’ areas and the stadium between events.

Spartans jump out to 7-1 start on soccer season

SOLON– The first loss of the season for the Spartans’ varsity soccer team came over the weekend at a Hudson tournament.
Solon fell, 3-1, to host #5 (2A) Hudson after defeating Webster City and Postville.
Added to a 3-2 win over South Tama April 7 at home, and the Spartans are 7-1 on the soccer season.
Sophomore Luke Yetley scored all three goals for the Spartans against the Trojans after a scoreless first period for both squads.
