Lady Spartans bid adieu to 2019 with 54-47 win

Solon defeats one-loss Beckman at home

SOLON– “A win tonight would make Christmas stuffing taste better,” Assistant Coach Jim Smith said on Friday night, Dec. 20, in the heat of the fourth quarter during a varsity basketball game between the Lady Spartans and the Beckman Trailblazers.
Solon hung on, following a one-point deficit, 18-17, in the first quarter, to build a seven-point lead at the half, 30-23. A tight battle in the third quarter, during which Beckman rallied to outscore Solon, 15-11, to trail, 41-38, before the Lady Spartans rebounded to triumph, 54-47, over a previously 6-1 Trailblazer team.

Sheriffs office confirms pharmacy break-in

SOLON– What was originally thought to be a fluke accident is now being investigated as a burglary.
According to Lt. Randy Lamm of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, an alarm was reported at Solon Towncrest Pharmacy shortly after 4 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23.
Both the responding deputy and the owner found the glass of the front door shattered, but everything appeared to be in place with no other evidence of a break-in.

SWISHER– The sights and sounds of the season were on full display Saturday, Dec. 14, in a small, northwestern Johnson County community as “A Very Merry Christmas in Swisher” was held for an evening of holiday festivities.

Council passes first reading of zoning changes

SOLON For now, there will be no short-term rentals in residential areas.
The first reading of an ordinance limiting such rentals to commercial areas was passed at a Dec. 18 meeting of the Solon City Council.
Council members were asked to consider allowing the alternate lodging in residential zones by Michelle Bennett, of Solon, who has been offering short-term stays in a house at 113 E. Elm Street.
Council members stuck with the recommendations of the citys Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission, but left the door open to future modifications.

CORALVILLE– ‘Twas the week before Christmas, and all across the pool, final warm-up laps were swum, Lions “roared” and the Trojan-Bolts let out a war whoop before notching yet another home dual meet win Tuesday, Dec. 17, as the Linn-Mar Lions visited Iowa City West.
The West High-Liberty High combined team swept the Lions with the junior varsity winning, 133-37, and the varsity taking a 119-51 victory.

CEDAR RAPIDS– Five pins.
That’s how close the Iowa City West High varsity boys bowling team came to picking up a win Tuesday, Dec. 17, on the road at the Cedar Rapids Bowling Center in a match against Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The Cougars won 2,698 to West’s 2,694 with Clear Creek Amana’s Stirlen Roberson, competing with the Trojans, leading all with 513 pins knocked down.
West’s junior varsity (JV) boys fell 2,356 to 1,597 pins with Kennedy’s Hunter Leaven winning with 396 and West’s Caden Noeller leading the Trojans with 213.

Creek Girls tame Mustangs

Stratton’s 19 points leads CCA past Independence, 58-17

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls’ basketball team recovered from a loss to the Class 4A second-ranked Marion Indians with a 58-17 rout of the Independence Mustangs on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at home.
The Clippers wasted no time corralling the Mustangs, taking a 21-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, and held Indee to only three points in the second, building a 36-7 lead at halftime. The overhaul continued as the Creek Girls outscored Independence, 15-2, in the third for a 51-9 lead going into the final period.

Bolts improve to 4-0 with win over Bobcats

NORTH LIBERTY– The Liberty High varsity boys’ basketball squad improved to 4-0 on the season with a 51-42 win over the Western Dubuque Bobcats Tuesday, Dec. 17, at home. The Bolts trailed by a free throw, 12-11, at the end of the first period, but charged ahead to a 23-20 halftime lead. The Lightning held onto their lead in the third, taking the period, 12-8, for a 35-28 advantage going into the final quarter.

Creek Boys improve to 4-2 with win over Indee

Potter leads CCA with 16 points in 56-45 road win in Independence

INDEPENDENCE– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys’ basketball team extended its winning streak to four games with a 56-45 road win against the Independence Mustangs Tuesday, Dec. 17. The Clippers, fresh off their upset win over the Marion Indians, took a 19-10 first quarter lead, and were up 28-25 at halftime. The Mustangs crept ahead in the third period to take a 36-35 lead into the final quarter.

NLPD officers brighten Christmas with annual Shop With a Cop

CORALVILLE– The officers studied the documents before them, and questioned the young people in their custody. “What size does she wear?” “What does your brother like?” “Where’s the perfume at?”
These and many other vignettes were played out over the course of an hour Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Coralville Wal-Mart as officers with the North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) conducted their annual Shop With a Cop event.
