Forevergreen Rd. interchange becoming reality

Iowa Department of Transportation presents final design to council

NORTH LIBERTY– While not set to be fully functional until late 2019, plans for the Forevergreen Road interchange are virtually complete.
Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) staff presented a project overview, including a local roadway improvement plan, during a North Liberty City Council work session Tuesday, Sept. 13.
“We’re now reaching the detailed part of our design,” said IDOT engineer Newman Abuissa, who first presented the proposal to city council in September 2015.

Life on the mat

Missouri transplant opens martial arts gym for kids, adults

NORTH LIBERTY– When Ben Brown was a kid, he just wanted to be a ninja. Now, he hopes to help other kids on their way to fulfilling that dream.
And, the grown-ups are invited.
“I hear often that adults would love to train for various reasons, it’s a good workout, it sounds fun, or they just want to defend themselves,” said Brown. “But they just feel weird standing next to a 9-year-old. I get that completely.”

Girls 5th, boys 10th at Anamosa

By Joe Wilkinson
Special to the Economist
ANAMOSA– The annual ‘Run Round the Lake’ was more of a slip and slide this year. Midweek rain meant muddy side hills on the cross country course which rounds Central Park Lake near Anamosa. It evens out, though, since everybody runs the same course.
Solon’s varsity girls were fifth of 11 full teams. The boys were 10th of 12 teams on the 5 kilometer course, which threads through head-high prairie, pine woods, campground grass, the 26-acre lake’s dam and across the iconic wooden plank bridge.

Spartans in control

Harris rushes for four TDs as Solon downs Oskaloosa, 34-3

By Jeff Hess
Solon Economist
SOLON– The promise of an offensive duel never materialized in the Class 3A District 5 match-up on Friday, Sept. 23. The Spartans bum-rushed the Oskaloosa Indians, 34-3, under the lights at Spartan Stadium.
“We controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and we took advantage of some Oskaloosa turnovers,” Solon Head Coach Kevin Miller said. “Also, I thought our physical play set the tone early in the game.”

Lady Spartans swept by Cardinals

SOLON– The Maquoketa Cardinals were just a bit better all around, and it led to Solon dropping a WaMaC East varsity volleyball contest, 3-0, Sept. 20 in Solon.
Maquoketa defeated Solon 25-18, 25-18 and 25-18 to drop the Lady Spartans to 5-12 and winless at home on the season.

Report predicts more heavy rains for the Midwest

Impact of global warming is here but the fight is on

SOLON– Between 6 and 8 inches of rain fell on Solon in a matter of hours Thursday evening, Aug. 11, sending local creeks surging out of their banks and over roads to a level never seen before.
For the second time in three years, Randall Park was extensively damaged.
A similar flash flood struck in April of 2013 when severe thunderstorms and driving winds dumped as much as 8-inches of rain on the Solon area in a little over 24-hours.
In 2004, surging waters overtook the park just a year after the new playground structure was constructed.
