Mayor responds to charges of special treatment

SOLON– Mayor Steve Stange said he did nothing wrong.
At the conclusion of a lengthy and at times contentious council meeting April 19, Stange took time during his mayor’s comments to address the sale of his home to developers for a Main Street project.
“I’m tired of being accused of doing things inappropriately,” Stange said. “It’s to the point where I’ve just had enough.”
Last February or March, Stange said, he was approached by Mark Pattison about the possible sale of his home at 131 W. Main St.

“Yeah, I do,” Duncan responded.

Spring football scrimmage

Hawk Talk

The Iowa Hawkeyes held their final scrimmage of the spring last Friday night under the lights at Kinnick Stadium.
I sat in the press box with one of my homeboys from Moville, Jerry Steffen. Jerry and I went from kindergarten to graduation at Woodbury Central. He was the leadoff hitter on our junior high baseball team that won the state championship in little league in 1968.

On my recent trip home for my folks’ 70th anniversary, I found myself digging in the garden with Brad.

...a young man’s fancy

Food For Thought

My grandmother used to take great delight in quoting snippets of Tennyson’s poetry– especially bits about spring and love. She often had her own version of his famous lines, however. “In the spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love,” morphed into, “...a young man’s fancy, and an old one’s not too bad.” And she warned us about what could happen once the headiness of new love wore off by saying, “He will hold thee, when its passion will have spent its novel force, / something better than his dog, a little dearer than his horse.”
