Business Boom celebrates

Open house social offers new congregation for bustling business community

NORTH LIBERTY– Businesspeople, politicians and city employees alike socialized at North Liberty’s inaugural Business Boom on Thursday, Nov. 2. The open-house social, hosted from 5-6:30 p.m. at the South Slope Community Center, provided an opportunity for area businesspeople to meet and greet while celebrating the expansion of North Liberty.
Guests were treated to appetizers, beer and wine provided by Fareway and Big Grove Brewery. Multi-instrumentalist Joe Sorensen, adorned in calavera face paint, lent background music to event as he sang and played acoustic guitar and keyboard.

Tin Roost offers new gathering space

Unique food and drinks at an ambitious new North Liberty location

NORTH LIBERTY– Take a drive down Penn Street and you’ll quickly notice there’s a new hangout in townas. North Liberty introduces Tin Roost to its growing portfolio of restaurants.
The brand new location on Penn Street is visually impressive. Constructed in July, the modern style building features a bold, black and white rooster emblazoning its front, accented with wood paneling and corrugated steel, a fitting motif of Iowa farm culture.

Boys Basketball grades 3-6:

Registration will start around Nov. 17, with a coaches meeting to be held on Wednesday, Dec. 13. Games are played on Saturdays in January and February, tentatively starting Jan. 20, in the Lakeview Elementary gymnasium. Registration forms will be distributed to Solon students through the school and also available on the Solon Parks and Recreation website and at City Hall.

Wartburg’s homecoming against Loras serves as reunion for five Spartan families

WAVERLY– Wartburg College’s homecoming was a bit of a reunion for five Spartan alum on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Zimmerman field, following the Knights’ win over the Loras Duhawks, 42-11. Wartburg senior Chris McNutt and sophomore Brandan Childs met former high school football teammates Loras sophomores Spencer Lawson and Dalton Vislisel along with freshman Jarod Clevenger and their families joined together at the Wartburg “W” at midfield following the game.

Solon crushes West Delaware, 54-14

Spartans to UNI-Dome to face unbeaten Xavier in 3A semi

SOLON– Solon’s defense made statements all season and Coach Kevin Miller challenged the offense.
On Friday, Nov. 3, the Spartan offense answered resoundingly, defeating the West Delaware Hawks, 54-14, to advance to the state semifinals to face Cedar Rapids Xavier, the only other 11-0 team in Class 3A football.
“This was the first time, this season, we put all three phases together. Overall, I thought we executed at a high level and we valued the football. Defensively, we played well, other than a couple of plays where we failed to execute our assignments,” Coach Miller commented.

Beef Days contributes $10,000 to Solon fire department

Solon Education Foundation announces teacher grants

SOLON– The Solon Education Foundation announced the recipients of this year’s annual Solon Community School District Teacher Grant program. Endowments and donations to the foundation made it possible to award almost $60,000 in grants since 2003.

• Jenny Boldt, SHS Science- Vernier force sensors.
• Melanie Bouzek, SHS Science- Science fair project supplies.

Gingerbread House Decorating Workshop

There are two sessions available on Monday, Nov. 13: one at 5:30 p.m. and another at 6:45 p.m. Each family receives one house to decorate plus the frosting and assorted decorations. To reserve a house, stop in to sign up at the circulation desk or call the library at 319-624-2678. Sign up soon as the sessions fill up rapidly.

Thanksgiving Meal at Our Lord’s Church

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will serve a free Thanksgiving meal Thursday, Nov. 23. All are welcome. Reservations are not required but would be helpful. The meal will be served at noon at the church, located at 131 N. Market St. in Solon. Rides and deliveries are also available.
