Liberty High picks up first XC team win at Mediapolis

Lightning’s Woodward and Mac earn first individual wins

WAPELLO– Liberty High’s varsity cross country teams reached new milestones Thursday, Oct. 12, as the boys earned their first meet win, the girls nearly took the runner-up spot and a pair of Bolts recorded their first victories in the Mediapolis Cross Country Spectacular held at the Indian Hills Country Club in Wapello.

CCA boys post highest conference meet finish in school history

VINTON– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys cross country squad earned some bragging rights Thursday, Oct. 12, as they posted a third-place finish in the WaMaC Conference Championships meet at Vinton-Shellsburg High School. Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the varsity boys title with 56 points followed by Marion (64) and the Clippers in third close behind with 67.
“You’ll see that the CCAXC boys finished third in one of the tightest races we’ve seen!” CCA Coach Ben Robison proudly noted. “This was our highest WaMaC finish since joining the conference.”

Trojans clinch postseason berth

IC West rolls over Linn-Mar, 42-7

IOWA CITY– With one week remaining in the regular season, the Iowa City West High Trojans have clinched a spot in the Class 4A football playoffs with an 8-0 record after rolling over the Linn-Mar Lions 42-7 Friday, Oct. 13, in Iowa City.
The Trojans remained the only unbeaten squad in Class 4A District 8 with Cedar Rapids Prairie (3-1, 7-1) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (3-1, 6-2) left to battle it out for the runner-up spot in the district (and a guaranteed playoff berth) or a possible wild card selection.

Davenport Assumption sinks CCA, 41-7

TIFFIN– The Knights of Davenport Assumption locked themselves into a three-way battle for the top of Class 3A District 4, and either a guaranteed football playoff berth or possible wild card spot Friday, Oct. 13, by defeating the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers 41-7 in Tiffin. The Clippers, with four losses, are out of the playoff picture for 2017 and were playing their final home game of the year ahead of ending the season Friday, October 20 in DeWitt.
The Knights began spoiling CCA’s Senior Night with 4:47 remaining in the first quarter by scoring on a short run for a 7-0 lead.

Mt. Pleasant defeats Liberty volleyball, 3-2

NORTH LIBERTY– The regular season ended on a tough note for the Liberty High varsity volleyball team as the Mount Pleasant Panthers defeated the young team 3-2 (27-25, 14-25, 26-24, 24-26, 16-14) Thursday, Oct. 12, at Liberty.

Swisher Auxiliary to host Annual Homemade Turkey Supper and Turkey Bingo Nov. 4

SWISHER– Swisher Auxiliary’s Annual Homemade Turkey Supper and Turkey Bingo will hosted Saturday, Nov 4, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Swisher American Legion, located at 68 3rd St. SE, in Swisher.
Cost of the event is adults $10, children 6-12 years old $5 with under 5 admitted free.
The Junior Auxiliary will also host a turkey bingo upstairs. Cost is $1 to play bingo for the opportunity to win a frozen turkey. Bingo begins at 4:30 p.m. and lasts until the turkeys are gone. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Clear Creek Amana Student Assistance Team/Interact club annual Senior Supper Nov. 4

TIFFIN– On Saturday, Nov. 4, the Clear Creek Amana Student Assistance Team/Interact club will host its annual Senior Supper at the high school in Tiffin. The club members look forward to an evening with members of the district 55-years-young or older. A main course of turkey, ham and mashed potatoes is provided and the students will provide the rest of the meal as pot luck. Serving starts at 6 p.m. Patrons may look forward to an evening of not quite fine dining but good conversation, good food and meeting new and returning friends.

Tunnel, mazes, carnival games and fun for just $2 per child. Children must be accompanied by adults. Come in costume and have a frightful time. Activities, snacks, drinks and candy supplied by NL Optimist Club & Recreation Staff. Photos will be taken free of charge by Sandi Spurrell Photography and posted to her website. Pay at the door, no preregistration required.

Annual F.A.M.E Fruit, Meat and Cheese fundraiser Oct. 12 to Nov. 1

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Fine Arts and Music Enhancers (F.A.M.E.) is the fine arts booster club which provides extra funding for the art, band, music, drama and speech programs at all the schools in the Clear Creek Amana Community School District. The annual Fruit, Meat and Cheese event is the main fundraiser. For over 20 years, students and parents involved in the CCA fine arts programs raise money by selling fruit, meat, cheeses and nuts to family and friends.

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s October, and that means it’s time for National Fire Prevention Week.
On the morning of Friday, Oct. 13, Captain Chris Kochanny and Lieutenant Mike Johnson of the North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD) took turns presenting information to the students of Garner Elementary, assisted by a slideshow, videos and various props.
