Construction to start on Hwy. 1/Main Street signalization project

SOLON– Within a month, the intersection of Highway 1 and Main Street will likely be fully signalized.
According to City Engineer Dave Schechinger, construction of the traffic signals was expected to begin after Beef Days and be completed some time in August.
Schechinger reported on the status of the project at a July 6 meeting of the Solon City Council, noting a pre-construction meeting had been held with contractor Advanced Electric Service.
Advanced submitted the lowest of six bids for the project– $98,430– and was awarded the project at a March 2 meeting.

A habit of volunteerism

SOLON– For Marcy and Larry Olson community service is just the right thing to do – whether it takes the form of Marcy’s food deliveries to seniors in Solon or Larry’s route transporting children with special needs to and from school.
If you ask them why they do it, they’ll reply: just because.
“I don’t really think about it, I guess,” Larry said. “It’s just something I do.”

SCSD board considers tighter open enrollment

With more housing options, directors want parents to invest in Solon

By Doug Lindner

SOLON– Two years ago, the Solon school board voted to further restrict the number of students entering the district through open enrollment.
Now, board members are thinking about closing the door.
Ceasing all open enrollment was one of the possible scenarios discussed by board members at a July 11 regular meeting, and although no decisions were made, at least one board member said he was leaning in that direction.

Game Time

Hawk Talk

NORTH LIBERTY– The Game Time League started July 6 and all of Iowa’s freshmen basketball players are not only playing, but looking good.
The Hawkeyes’ incoming class, ranked seventh in the nation, possesses a combination of size, shooters and ball handlers.
Start with Makenzie Meyer, a 5-10 guard from Mason City who was named 2016 Iowa Miss Basketball.
Meyer helped Mason City to their first-ever state championship in girls basketball in 2016.
She was a four-time all-conference pick and a three-time all-state selection.

Madeline L. Mitchell

Madeline Louise Mitchell passed away peacefully on Friday, July 8, 2016, while at the Hospice Unit at Mercy Iowa City. She was 97 years old, but still young at heart and will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life Gathering was held Sunday, July 17, at Brosh Chapel and the Avacentre, in Solon.

When I grow up, I want to be a...

Food For Thought

One of the television stations I watch is having another one of their summer essay contests for kids. This one is about their dreams and ambitions for the future. They are to write about what they want to be when they grow up. I’m sure there will be the predictable themes of fireman, nurse, policeman and doctor– people they have learned, early in life, to admire, as well as some of the glamorous occupations– movie actor, astronaut, cowboy, athlete, rock star.

Walkin'

This week’s column is written in the Dancing Bear Community room of The Lodge of the Whispering Pines on the edge of the Boundary Waters near Ely, Minn.
I have heard some murmurs in the trees, but mostly it’s been the rain that has managed to work its way into camp conversation four of the five days here.
