Wrestlers Stay Unbeaten

IOWA CITY– The wrestlers finished their dual season undefeated, beating Indiana and Northwestern. That’s the first time since the 1999-2000 season that the Hawks were perfect and the 24 wins are the most in school history.
On Friday, the Hawkeyes knocked off Indiana, 24-12, winning six matches and losing four, including a forfeit at heavyweight as Dan Erickson’s ankle continues to heal.
A great win by Charlie Faulk at 125. Charlie beat the defending NCAA champ and Big Ten champ Angel Escobedo 3-1 in overtime to get the Hawks off to a good start.


Men’s Basketball goes into OT win

IOWA CITY– Back in 1939, the Iowa football team was called the “Ironmen” because most of the players played the whole game.
Heisman trophy winner Nile Kinnick played nearly seven straight games without going to the sidelines until a shoulder injury sent him to the bench.
Fast forward 70 years and four of Iowa’s starting five in basketball played the whole game… and the five-minute overtime.
Jake Kelly, Matt Gatens, Aaron Fuller and Devan Bawinkel did not come out in the 70-60 overtime win against Michigan Sunday at Carver.


Food For Thought

Do you ever wonder where the names of things came from? I often do, especially when the word is a colorful one that rolls off the tongue and delights the ear. There is an old legend that it was the baby angels who were delegated to designing the world’s insects, which is why they’re so varied and fanciful. Unlike mammals, which can usually be identified as being members of different families, rodents, marsupials, etc., insects very often don’t much resemble some of their close relatives.


Balancing act

TIFFIN– “We don’t have all of the data we need to tell you concrete things yet,” said Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Superintendent Dr. Paula Vincent, speaking to the district’s school board at their meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
The agenda items were to be staffing projections for 2009-2010 and presentation of the 2009-2010 proposed budget. Recent changes and a host of variables instead made the presentation a preliminary one, as Vincent sought guidance from the board in preparation for an upcoming budget work session.
The district must have its budget certified by Wednesday, April 15.


‘I do’ it all over again

CORALVILLE– In traditional Valentine’s style, candles flickered, soft music wafted and words of romance were whispered between couples in love.
It was no less romantic that this Valentine’s Day, these couples spoke their vows in a church sanctuary within earshot of about three dozen strangers.
The Coralville United Methodist Church hosted a vow renewal ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 14, one event in the church’s year-long commemoration of its own 50th anniversary.
Lisa Beal is a church member who organized the vow renewal ceremony.

NORTH LIBERTY– To attend this year’s presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C. was nearly a historical feat in itself. The cold temperatures, unprecedented turnout and increased security did not deter an estimated two million people from trekking to the national mall on Jan. 20 to witness the swearing in of our nation’s first black president.
But Penn Elementary School teacher Jake Cummer made sure his students had front row seats.

UI men still hurting

IOWA CITY– I’m looking at the Iowa bench in their 49-45 home loss to Purdue last Saturday and I saw three starters who couldn’t play against the Boilermakers.
First you have Anthony Tucker, academically ineligible, who is the Hawks' best three-point shooter, along with Matt Gatens.
Sitting next to Anthony was Jeff Peterson, Iowa’s only true point guard, who leads the team in assists and steals.
Jeff has been playing with a broken bone in his left wrist, but a hamstring pull in last Wednesday’s loss to Wisconsin put him on the bench for the whole game.

William Matthew English Jr.,

William Matthew English Jr., 73, passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, in his home in Anamosa. Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 10 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Anamosa with Father Wayne Droessler officiating. Visitation and a Scripture service were held Monday, Feb. 8 at the funeral home. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery in Anamosa.

Doris M. Neal

Doris M. Neal, 76, of Swisher, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Memorial services were held Saturday, Feb. 14, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Visitation was an hour before services. Inurnment will be at a later date in Anderson Cemetery, Swisher.
Doris was born July 1, 1932, in Marion, the daughter of Walter B. and Thelma Iris (Oliver) Strong. She married Norman Lee Neal on April 28, 1954, in Cedar Rapids.


Larry E. Prull

Larry E. Prull, 61, of Cedar Rapids, died of cancer Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center. Services were held Friday, Feb. 13, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with military rites. Burial was in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation was Feb. 12 at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy; a daughter, Penny Prull of North Liberty; a son, Brian (Cynthia) of Calif.; two brothers, Robert (Bonnie) of Anamosa and Ralph (Katie) of Visalia, Calif.; and two sisters, Maryjo Nagel of Laguna Beach, Calif., and Lorna (Ray) Ellis of Manchester.
