Fishing for funds

NORTH LIBERTY– Some North Liberty homeowners are learning the hard way the dubious joys of pond ownership. Two representatives of the homeowner’s association from Penn Prairie on the Pond subdivision approached the North Liberty City Council last week to ask for assistance, and learned anew about the city council’s aversion to precedent-setting spending.

Tiffin mired in pond issues

TIFFIN— As the public filtered into the Springmier Community Library Wednesday, June 13, it looked as though another contentious night was shaping up for the Tiffin City Council. During public comments at the May 9 regular meeting, residents around a retention pond located between the Rolling Hills and Woodfield Ridge Additions housing developments berated Mayor Steve Berner for his decision to suspend work on the pond.

City to add on?

TIFFIN– The Tiffin City Council discussed the possibility of another municipal annexation. The city’s Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Committee identified and prioritized three areas around the city which seem ripe for annexing. The highest priority is an area south and east of the current city limits, bounded by 340th Street on the north, US Hwy. 218 on the east, 360th Street on the south and Jasper Avenue on the west. Kansas Avenue runs through the area.

Front Street closed for construction this week

NORTH LIBERTY– Starting Monday afternoon, June 18, Front Street will be closed between West Walnut and East Chestnut to accommodate utility service connections to 145 North Front St. The road is expected to reopen by Friday, June 22, contingent on weather. Traffic control signs will be in place to detour through traffic to Dubuque Street and Zeller.
Construction Inspector Bill Minor said, “Basically, there will be a sewer service connection to a new duplex. There will be some trench work in order to install the sewer and water services. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

Sherman to appear at ‘Sippin’ with Steve’ in Swisher June 20

NORTH LIBERTY– Steve Sherman, GOP nominee for HD77, is to meet with voters in Swisher. The “Sippin’ with Steve” meet and greet will be on Wednesday, June 20, at 10 a.m. at the Kava House, 122 2nd St. SW in Swisher. Everyone is welcome and there is no cost to attend.
House District 77 is a newly created district which includes most of western and southern Johnson County including the communities of Swisher, Shueyville, Oxford, Tiffin, Lone Tree, Sharon Center, Frytown and North Liberty.
Steve Sherman is an 18-year resident of North Liberty. He and his wife Amy have four children.

Ninth annual Swisher 5K run/walk Aug. 4

SWISHER– The ninth annual Swisher 5K run and walk and free kids fun run will be held at the Swisher American Legion Pavilion on Aug. 4. The events are part of the Swisher Fun Days.
Interested participants can pre-register online at runningwall.com before Aug. 1.

We Run store to host barefoot runner Wednesday, June 20

NORTH LIBERTY– We Run will host Rae Heim, the 18-year-old Iowa girl running across America barefoot, on Wednesday, June 20, at its North Liberty store, 555 Hwy. 965, Ste. B. Rae will share her story about running across America, her purpose and her connection with the Soles for Souls project. She will be answering questions and will take pictures with everyone. Refreshments will be served.

Spaghetti supper fundraiser to benefit Zschiesche family June 22

NORTH LIBERTY– The community is invited to participate in a spaghetti supper fundraiser to benefit the family of Jack Zschiesche on Friday, June 22, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. at North Liberty First United Methodist Church, 85 Jones Blvd., North Liberty.
Dinner will be provided by Zio Johno’s. The cost is $8 for adults and $6 for children.

First United Methodist Church hosts ‘Sky: Everything is Possible with God’

NORTH LIBERTY– The First United Methodist Church, 85 N Jones Blvd., will host the summer children’s event “Sky: Everything is Possible with God,” from July 8 to July 11 for kids age three through sixth grade and an overnight on July 13 for kids in fourth through sixth grades. Faith and imagination soar as kids discover that everything is possible with God.

Fireworks over Lake Macbride July 4

SOLON– Fireworks will start about dark on Independence Day at Lake Macbride.
There will be a boat parade that is open to everyone. Decorate your boat and meet at the causeway at 4 p.m. Donations may be sent to Mark Ramsey, 1598 Spartan Cir. Solon, IA 52333.
