Hawk Talk

Last week, a handful of Hawkeye football players met with some of the media to talk football, summer workouts and bear hunting…
James Vandenberg was the focus of attention as he went to Canada a few weeks ago and came back with a bear as big as the defensive line. The most amazing thing is that he took it down with a bow and arrow.
I got a chance to talk to Kevonte Martin-Manley, C.J. Fiedorowicz, Christian Kirksey and Micah Hyde. There were no bear stories…

Solon Senior of Year<br>Anna McAtee

By Doug Lindner

SOLON– Two decades of volunteering would sound like a lot of work to some people.
For Anna McAtee, it’s all been fun.
Over the last 20 years, McAtee has been playing dominos, calling bingo and helping with church projects in the Solon community, and last month her work was recognized when Solon Senior Advocates named her the 2012 Solon Senior of the Year.

Shooters take second

CEDAR FALLS– The Cinderella story of the Solon Spartans Trap Shooting Team continues.
In just its second year as an independent team, Solon’s squad participated in a two-day state championship meet in Cedar Falls June 1 and 2, and fell just five points short of a state title.
The Spartan shooters, consisting of middle school and high school students, placed second in the overall Iowa Cup, which combines points from league scoring and two statewide tournaments.
Maquoketa scored 2,112 and Solon scored 2,107 out of 2,250 possible points for the cup.
