Food For Thought

I was born into a family of picnickers. This was probably due to several conditions– one being the fact that the Great Depression made it necessary to seek out inexpensive family entertainment. A picnic was easy. You’re going to eat anyway, right? So, if you can pack up your food and eat it outdoors, it becomes an event, not just another meal.

Hawk Talk

This is the second part of a two-part story on Trisha Nesbitt and Jaime Printy.

Jaime Printy was having an All-Big Ten year before she went down with a season-ending knee injury against Wisconsin.
Jaime was leading the team in scoring (16.9), steals (2.0) and free throw percentage (.888).
The game was at Wisconsin and I remember listening to it on the radio. There was only 36 seconds left in overtime and Iowa was leading 81-77 when Jaime was fouled.
I knew it was a hard foul but thought she was okay because she was shooting free throws.

Telling the story of Sutliff

KENT PARK– Did you know a ferry preceded the bridge at Sutliff? What do you know about the Cedar River? Would you believe Sutliff once consisted of more than just Baxa’s Tavern? What makes a truss bridge a “Parker” truss?
Answers to these questions and more may soon be found on interpretive panels placed along the historic Sutliff Bridge, currently undergoing reconstruction in the wake of the 2008 flood.

Scott’s Sandwich Café: A place of his own in Ely

ELY– For Gary Scott, operating a bistro of his own has been on small step after another. From helping customers behind the counter to running the kitchen and creating his restaurant’s menu and building a following, he’s got the years of experience and kitchen hands of a professional.
Scott worked in pizza restaurants for years, managing, delivering, baking pies and cleaning up, but always for somebody else.
So after getting out of food service for a brief period when he worked in a Cedar Rapids foundry, he went back to school to learn the hospitality business at Kirkwood Community College.
