Sheriff's Dept. warns of fundraiser scam

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has received a complaint from a citizen reporting that an organization is calling residents telling them that they are selling magazine subscriptions as a fundraiser for the Johnson County Police. They might say the fundraiser is to try and raise funds for bulletproof vests for the local agencies.

Four submitted petitions to run for mayor, council

NORTH LIBERTY– Four individuals will run for two open North Liberty City Council seats this Nov. 3, 2009, while the mayor’s race will be uncontested.
Petitions filed with the City of North Liberty by the Sept. 17 deadline to run for the expiring council seats of Gerry Kuhl and Jim Wozniak came from the following residents: David Grex, 1032 Maple St.; Gerry Kuhl, 1180 St. Andrews Dr.; Jonathan Waller, 1155 Winchester Ln.; and Brian Wayson, 1550 W. Forevergreen Rd.
Current Mayor Tom Salm, 35 N. Dubuque St., will run unchallenged for his second term as mayor.

CCA Supt. gives mostly positive progress report

OXFORD — Each year, school districts are required by the Department of Education to submit a progress report covering such topics as student achievement, enrollment, and finances.
Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Superintendent Dr. Paula Vincent gave a greatly condensed version of selected highlights during the Sept. 16 school board meeting. Vincent noted the State of Iowa would review the full report, and make recommendations for any deficiencies with a timeline for improvements if warranted.

Growing season: North Liberty’s Farmer’s Market more successful than first year

NORTH LIBERTY– Summer may officially end this month, but expect six more weeks of a great summertime tradition here in North Liberty.
The North Liberty Farmer’s Market, held each Sunday from 1-4 p.m. at the North Liberty Community Center parking lot, will wrap up its second season Oct. 25. Co-organizer Matt Meseck of the North Liberty Recreation Department has been pleased with the market’s growth over last year.

CCA school board installs new members

OXFORD — The Sept. 8 school board election, combined with resignations, has changed the look of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School Board.
Board president Dan Schaapveld (at-large director) decided not to seek re-election, while Kathy Zimmerman (director district No. 2) was defeated at the polls. Matthew Croco (director district No. 4) resigned in July after moving out of the district, leaving an open seat.
In their places came Eileen Schmidt, who beat Zimmerman; Aimee Pitlick (at-large); and write-in candidate Mick Kahler, who pursued Croco’s vacancy.

Fantastic gymnastics: Rebel Xtreme offers classes in new center

NORTH LIBERTY– Shauna Wood Holm has danced, flipped and tumbled her way from little Martelle, Iowa, all across the country, and has made a career out of teaching others to do the same.
Shauna is the director of Rebel Xtreme, the gymnastics, cheerleading and tumbling studio that Shauna started and nurtured into a bi-state business that regularly turns out national title-winning teams and college scholarship athletes.

Walkin'

Pearl, our two-and-a-half-year-old Labradoodle, returned to her old tricks recently.
We adopted Pearl through a local dog rescue operation. By six months, she didn’t sell so she either had to get out or be put down. She probably never stepped a paw outside of a cage. Kept on a diet that makes stools soft, her six square feet of space was cleaned by a disinterested worker with a hose.
It was all she knew.
Then one day she was suddenly yanked into another cage, which was scary enough, but it did something that terrified her even more: it shook as it was in transport to us, her new friends.

Food for Thought

One of my sisters and I were reminiscing over some old photos of family picnics and other excursions. (We never actually had family vacations as such except for one memorable occasion when we visited Melen, Wis., where both our parents attended high school. If there were photos taken then, they reside in someone else's picture album, for I don't seem to have any.)

Sleepless in North Liberty

I didn’t want to go to sleep last Saturday night.
After Iowa’s stunning 21-10 comeback victory over fifth-ranked Penn State, I didn’t want that good feeling to end.
109,000 fans all dressed for the whiteout (minus about 3,000 wearing black and gold), pouring rain all day and all during the game, the Nittany Lions jumping out to a 10-0 lead and everybody, that is everyone outside the state of Iowa picking Penn State to avenge the 24-23 loss from last year.
