Clark The doctors are IN

NORTH LIBERTY— The city’s first full-time orthodontic office has opened and is currently accepting new patients.
Drs. Sarah and Tanner Clark, DDS, MS opened the doors to Clark Orthodontics on Wednesday, Feb. 15. For the husband and wife dental team, having their own private practice is the realization of years of hard work and dreaming.

Democrats rally around education

CORALVILLE— Education took center stage Saturday, Feb. 25, at the second of four legislative forums sponsored by the Johnson County League of Women Voters. The event, held at the Coralville Public Library, was co-sponsored by the Hawkeye Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Iowa Federation of Labor.
Five Democrat legislators, Rep. Vicki Lensing (HD-78), Rep. Dave Jacoby (HD-30), Rep. Mary Mascher (HD-77), Sen. Bob Dvorsky (SD-15) and Sen. Joe Bolkcom (SD-39) were in attendance. Democrat Rep. Nate Willems (HD-29) declined to attend.

Sign-up for Babe Ruth League ends March 23

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Babe Ruth League registration is open to the residents of North Liberty, Coralville and the surrounding communities.
Registration fee of $150 include full uniform (hat, jersey, pants, socks, belt), league fees and insurance. Final registration ends March 23.

DES MOINES– The West High Women of Troy struck gold in the Wells Fargo Arena, earning their first-ever State Basketball Championship Saturday night (March 3) with a stunning win over Ankeny in overtime.
The Tournament campaign started with a stunning 55-52 win Wednesday (Feb. 29) over rival City High.
West had already beaten the Little Hawks twice in the regular season and were expecting a fight from the opening tip-off.

Trojans return to Des Moines for another chance at state title

MUSCATINE– West High coach Steve Bergman always gives you a straight assessment and pulls no punches. Following the Trojans’ substate final win Tuesday, Feb. 28, over Bettendorf, he summed up his squad’s performance.
“There were things out there I didn’t like, but you know, we’re undefeated and going to the state tournament. We have a team that can go down there and do well.”

Hancher presents Lucky Plush Productions’ ‘Punk Yankees’ March 8 at Space/Place Theater

IOWA CITY– Using dance to investigate issues of intellectual property, Lucky Plush Productions combines live performance, video, and the Internet in “Punk Yankees.” The University of Iowa’s Hancher will present the company at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in Space/Place Theater, which is located in North Hall on the UI campus.

SOLON– Kathy and Jim Bruxvoort opened their newest H&R Block office in Solon in January when they felt embraced by the residents from day one.
“Everyone has been extremely helpful and welcoming,” Kathy said. “We’re honored to be a part of the Solon community.”
The office, located at 101 Windflower Lane, has four tax professionals to service Solon residents.

IOWA CITY– Two figures stand facing each other. They are clad in protective clothing, their faces protected by mesh. Weapons are drawn, an epée, a saber or perhaps a foil. Deft movements and swift swordsmanship ensue as the pair battles to a resolution. But there is no violence, there is no bloodshed. The vanquished lives to duel again.
It’s a hobby and it’s a sport.

Solon Economist, Leader garner awards at Iowa newspaper contest

DES MOINES– The Solon Economist and North Liberty Leader newspapers received numerous awards in the INA 2012 Better Newspaper Contests earlier this month. The contests were judged by the Nebraska Press Association as part of the INA 2012 Convention and Trade Show held Feb. 2-3 at the Des Moines Marriott Hotel.
Nearly 3,800 entries in dozens of categories were judged by class, based on circulation. The Des Moines Register was named as the Iowa Newspaper Association “2012 Newspaper of the Year.”
