SHS Art Club’s Empty Bowls Luncheon this Saturday

SOLON– When you attend the third annual Empty Bowls Luncheon to End Hunger this weekend, remember you’re helping fill someone’s else’s plate.
The Solon Art Club will host the luncheon Saturday, March 31, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Solon High School (SHS) commons, with proceeds to be donated to the Johnson County Crisis Center and Food Bank.
Members of the art club have been working for months to create upwards of 300 ceramic bowls for the luncheon, each representing an empty bowl in the hands of some other citizen of the world.

WaMaC art show April 10

Solon High School will be hosting the annual WaMaC art show at the Double Round Barn at Celebration Farm on Tuesday, April 10. Twenty Solon High School students will be in attendance, representing Solon’s art program this year. The annual event hosts eight schools and approximately 160 students competing in 16 categories. Let’s go SpARTans.

Spotlight Spaghetti Dinner Mar. 29

Mark your calendars for Thursday, March 29, for the annual “Solon Spotlight Spaghetti Dinner.” This will be held in the high school commons immediately before the Solon musical showcase concert. Spaghetti, salad, bread, drink and dessert will be available for $8 adults and $5 children 10 and under. Serving times are 4:45 until 7 p.m. Diners will enjoy pre-concert entertainment by the high school jazz bands, jazz choirs and the middle school show choirs.

Coe College honor bands

This year 38 fifth through eighth grade band students were accepted to the Coe College elementary, junior or senior high honor band which will take place on Saturday, April 21, for the elementary honor band and Sunday, April 22, for the junior and senior high honor bands at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. Students will be preparing five or six pieces of music that they will rehearse and perform with students from other schools accepted to the honor band with the well known composer Larry Neek as one of the guest conductors. Tickets may be purchased at the door for these concerts.

MS ‘Dinner and Dance’ April 14

Saturday, April 14, will be the fifth annual “Dinner and Dance.” This event is hosted by the middle school choir and jazz bands. Buffet dinner begins at 4:45 p.m. in the middle school lunch room with entertainment provided by the show choirs. The dance begins at 7 p.m. in the gym, with music provided by the two middle school jazz bands and the professional group “Iowa Vanguard Jazz Collective.” Prices are as follows: “Dinner and Dance” adult tickets $15, and student tickets $12. Under 5, faculty and one guest, and performers are $8.

Summer driver education meeting

There will be a driver education parent meeting at 5:30 p.m., on Monday, April 9, in the middle school auditorium. This will be an opportunity for the driver education instructors to briefly explain the summer program and to answer questions you may have about the summer program. We understand that getting your child to and from both class and driving times can be challenging during the summer. With this in mind, we encourage you to talk with each other at the conclusion of this meeting to arrange transportation during the summer to and from class and driving times.

Dance, Dance, Dance

SOLON– It was a spectacular show.
The Solon High School Dance Team invited five other high school dance, pom and cheer squads and dancers from North Liberty’s Just for Kix programs in the eighth annual Dance Spectacular in Solon on Friday, Feb. 17.
Over 200 dancers in the various groups took turns showing off their best moves to music in front of a packed house for a two-hour dance extravaganza at the Spartan Gym.

Local governments share top priorities, local issues

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District’s (ICCSD) plans to sell Roosevelt Elementary, and its continued redistricting efforts dominated the conversation at a joint government meeting last week.
Representatives from ICCSD, Johnson County and the cities of Coralville, Iowa City, North Liberty, Hills, Lone Tree and University Heights gathered at the Iowa City Public Library on March 21 for a quarterly joint governmental meeting, primarily an information-sharing opportunity between the entities.
