Walter “Mac” Holderness

Walter “Mac” Holderness, 78, of Millersburg, went to his eternal rest Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, following an accident. Visitation was Oct. 16 at Powell Funeral Home in North English. Funeral service was held Saturday, Oct. 17, at Millersburg Methodist Church. Burial with military honors was in Millersburg Cemetery.

Richard Lynch

Richard G. Lynch, MD, 75, formerly of Iowa City, died at his home in Solon on Monday, Oct. 12, 2009. Memorial services are pending at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Richard G. & Nancy A. Lynch Fellowship, c/o University of Iowa Foundation.

Faynola Petersen

Faynola Petersen, 83, a resident of the Hiawatha Care Center, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009. Graveside services were held Friday, Oct. 16, at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Randy Kasch of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Visitation was Thursday, Oct. 15, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include two sons, Brian L. Petersen and wife Lynette of North Liberty, and Lynn E. Petersen and wife Nancy of Cedar Rapids; a granddaughter, Taylor Petersen of Cedar Rapids; and a grandson, Nathanial Petersen and a granddaughter, Danielle Petersen, both of North Liberty.

Mary Martha Snell

Mary Martha Snell, 52, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, after a long illness. Services were held Thursday, Oct. 15, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Tom McDermott. Burial was Saturday, Oct. 17, at St. John Cemetery. A vigil was held Wednesday at Teahen Funeral Home, and visitation on Thursday at the church.

Meet candidates for NL City Council Oct. 28

NORTH LIBERTY– The League of Women Voters of Johnson County will hold a North Liberty City Council Candidate Forum on Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the North Liberty City Hall, Council Chambers, 5 E. Cherry Street, North Liberty. The forum will be broadcast on North Liberty City Cable TV. Four candidates, David J. Grex, Gerry Kuhl, Johnathan Waller and Brian Wayson will participate. The four candidates are vying for two open seats with Gerry Kuhl being the only incumbent.

Wine tasting at NL Community Library Oct. 30

NORTH LIBERTY– Please join the North Liberty Commuity Library on Oct. 30, from 7-8:30 p.m., for wine tasting with Tabor Home Wineries. Enjoy tasting a wide variety of wines from Tabor Home. Wines will be available for purchase. The wine tasting event will also feature a silent auction with many items. Bidding on silent auction items will begin at the Waffle Breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 24, and continue in the library throughout the week leading up to the wine tasting event. Auction winners can pay for and pick up their winnings during the wine tasting.

Fifth/sixth grade dance Oct. 30

NORTH LIBERTY– Area fifth and sixth-graders can support the North Liberty Library’s Teen Advocate Group by attending the Halloween Dance on Oct. 30 from 7-8:30 p.m. Dance admission is $5 and includes snacks, music, Wii and other games.

Election early voting/absentee ballots available now

IOWA CITY– Early voting is now available for all Johnson County cities for the City General Election to be held Nov. 3 at the Johnson County Auditor’s Office. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 913 S. Dubuque St. in Iowa City.

City adopts new sex offender restrictions

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty has adopted recent state-imposed restrictions on sex offenders.
At the Sept. 8, 2009, meeting, the North Liberty City Council unanimously approved a resolution stating anyone who has been convicted of a sex offense against a minor will not be allowed into the North Liberty Community Library without written permission of the Library Board of Trustees, nor will they be allowed to loiter within 300 ft. of the library grounds.
