9th annual Ely Fall Fest Sept. 16-18

ELY– The ninth annual Ely Fall Fest returns Sept. 16-18. The weekend festival begins Friday night with a Moonlight 5k and 1 mile run at 7:45 pm, followed with a community celebration. Saturday is an all-day festival featuring over 20 activities and events, including kids’ inflatables and games, an adult co-ed softball tournament, a cornhole tournament, pet parade, youth punt/pass/kick competition, magic show, wiener dog race, and live music throughout the day. The day is capped off with a fireworks display at dusk. Sunday is fully devoted to the Classic Car Show, 8 a.m. to 3:30 pm.

Giant balloon games at NLRC Sept. 16-17

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Recreation Center will join forces with Chad Johnson of ICBalloons to create the world’s first interactive giant balloon games event Sept. 16 from 3-7:30 p.m. and Sept. 17 from 2-7 pm.

Star Party Sept. 23 at Penn Meadows

NORTH LIBERTY– The night time is the right time! This is a family event, and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Library closed Sept. 16 for staff in-service training

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Library will be closed Friday, Sept. 16, for its annual staff in-service training.
During that day, all of the library’s upholstery will also be cleaned, and Iowa Prison Industries will move and reconfigure shelving in the kids’ area. This is one of the library’s first steps in redesigning the kids’ area to include activity stations.

Questions without easy answers

TIFFIN– The question itself is relatively simple on its face, imploring Clear Creek Amana (CCA) district officials to consider how best to accommodate expected continued enrollment and likely overcrowding with $25 million available in 2018.
The solution, or solutions, are not quite as simple, attendees at a Sept. 8 public forum at the high school in Tiffin discovered.

Refueling Meals on Wheels

IOWA CITY– Managed Medicaid is forcing local Meals on Wheels programs to live hand-to-mouth.
Elder Services, Inc., which operates Meals on Wheels in Johnson, Washington, Iowa and Cedar counties, began its ‘Refueling Meals on Wheels Campaign’ Sept. 7.
This campaign is focused on ensuring the viability of the Meals on Wheels program with a goal of raising $250,000.

Street line painting to be completed on Penn Street

NORTH LIBERTY– Crews are expected to finish painting lines for Penn Street’s additional lanes this week, representatives for the project’s general contractor, Metro Pavers, said Tuesday. The contractor is expected to have turn lanes open during peak traffic times, with occasional closures to complete the work.

TIPTON– A hot day. A crowded, winding course. But Solon’s cross country teams turned up a variety of bright spots. Solon’s boys counted two top-25 runners with their 10th-place finish in the 21-school Tiger Invitational, Sept. 6, at Tipton City Park. The girls notched seventh place and placed two top-20 runners among the 20 teams and 107 varsity runners there.

Spartans blow past Chiefs

Solon rebounds with 42-0 conference win over Keokuk

SOLON– Storms abounded across the Iowa farmscape on Friday, Sept. 9, forcing back the start time of Solon’s game against the Keokuk Chiefs to 8 p.m. The winds picked up and the first leaves of the fall began their chaotic dance across the streets of Solon as Acivities Director Zach Wigle’s tweet warned the Spartan faithful of the delay just as the deluge began its slow progression over the field.

Lady Spartans fall to No. 5 Mustangs, 3-0

SOLON– The varsity volleyball Lady Spartans fell in three sets to fifth-ranked (Class 3A) Mount Vernon Sept. 6 in Solon.
The loss dropped Solon to 4-7 on the season.
The Mustangs brought the offense in the 3-0 win (25-18, 25-19, 25-14), racking up 38 kills against the Lady Spartan defense.
