NORTH LIBERTY — For many families, Christmas break is not only two weeks of relative freedom from the rigors of the school day, but also two weeks of planning additional meals to feed the kids.
It can be difficult to stretch a household food budget that far.
The North Liberty Optimists Club, for the last five years, has stepped in to help.

OXFORD — How does a school district know if its teachers are engaging their students? How does a school district know if its teachers are employing professional methods of instruction?
These and other questions are the driving force behind a pilot program underway in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School District.
District Superintendent Dr. Paula Vincent reported on the project at the December meeting of the board of directors.

Michael A. Serovy, age 59 of rural Solon, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City from multiple myeloma cancer.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 29, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon. Visitation was at the church from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday. Burial with military honors was at St. Peter & Paul Cemetery rural Solon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Mike’s memory to Iowa City Hospice. Milton Charles Polehna, 79, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Memorial and Masonic services were Monday, Dec. 21, at Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church with Rev. William Harnish presiding. Burial followed in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation was Dec. 20 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids and an hour prior to the service at the church.
