NLYBS has another winning season

NORTH LIBERTY¬ The North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball league (NLYBS) recently completed its seventeenth year of providing recreational level baseball and softball opportunities for some 787 boys and girls, ages four to 13. While the majority of kids playing in NLYBS are from North Liberty, the league also has kids from Coralville, Solon, Tiffin and other area communities. In the 2009 summer season, NLYBS had 72 teams playing from May through June, with Junior and Senior softball and baseball teams involved in tournament play to complete the season.


The future’s so bright I gotta wear shades

NORTH LIBERTY– Cooking hot dogs, shooting off rockets and riding bicycles might sound like typical summer camp experiences. However, when you cook hot dogs in solar-powered potato chip cans, launch rockets fueled by hydrogen cells and ride bicycles connected to electricity generators, summer camp takes on a whole new meaning.
That’s the idea behind the many hands-on, fun learning stations offered at a one-day workshop conducted by Linn County Rural Electric Cooperative (REC) on July 15 at the North Liberty Recreation Center.

NORTH LIBERTY– Van Allen Elementary school will welcome many new faces this August, including one in the principal’s office.
Carmen Dixon has been assigned to replace former principal Brad Laures at the Iowa City Community School District elementary school in North Liberty.
Dixon’s education and career experiences illustrate seemingly boundless energy and her remarkable ability to tackle multiple tasks at once.


Candidates announced for CCA school board

TIFFIN — Four candidates will vie for two seats while a third goes uncontested in the upcoming Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school board election.
The Sept. 8 vote will determine who will fill director district No. 2 and an at-large position. Currently, Kathy Zimmerman has the district No. 2 (Tiffin, Cosgrove, and Windham) seat. She will face Eileen Schmidt on the ballot.
With current board president Daniel Schaapveld’s decision to vacate his at-large position, Barbara Kounkel and Aimee Pitlick will vie for the seat.


Solon senior dining welcomes NL seniors

SOLON– Old Gold Diner of Solon welcomes all seniors in North Liberty to join us for lunch.
We are located at the Solon United Methodist Church, 122 N. West St., and serve lunch daily Monday-Friday at 11:30 a.m. We request a contribution of $3 for those over 60, however, this is not required. We have bingo on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. and after the meal. We also have scheduled activities during the month. Transportation possibly could be arranged. NL Fire Department to hold family event Aug. 29

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Fire Department presents “Salute to the Summer” on Aug. 29 at Scales Point/Bobbers Grill, 1850 Scales Bend Rd. The event begins at 11:00 a.m and runs until 11:30 p.m. Rain date is Oct. 10.
Activities include:
• Inflatable rides for kids of all ages
• Motorcycle Poker Run, a 100-mile trip that starts at the NLFD Station at 10 a.m.
• Volleyball tournament at 11 a.m.
• Horseshoe tournament at 1 p.m.
• Mechanical bull from 3-11 p.m.
• Truck and equipment displays
• Fire Fighter Fred
• Live music by Twist and Shout from 7:30-11 p.m.


Ely Church to host Kolach Kamp and Tractor Ride Aug. 28

ELY– First Presbyterian Church near Ely will host a “Kolach Kamp” on Friday, August 28, in the church kitchen starting at 7 a.m. Kolach Kamp has been held periodically in the past few years in order to teach the art of making and baking the Czech pastry to our younger generation and others who wish to learn. Participants will be able to take home kolaches to their families at the conclusion of the morning of baking.


CCA to hold Open House Sunday, Aug. 23

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana High School will hold an Open House Sunday, August 23, at 551 West Marengo Road, Tiffin, Iowa. A Cornerstone Laying Ceremony will be held at 2 p.m., with the dedication and ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. Building Tours will be offered from 3:30 to 5 p.m.


Community Cookout in Swisher this Sunday

SWISHER– Valley Church in Swisher will host a Community Cookout on Sunday, Aug. 16, beginning at noon. The entire community is invited.
The church will serve hamburgers, hot dogs, lemonade and iced tea. There will be live music and a no-charge garage sale.

Betty L. Parsons

Betty L. Parsons, 68, of Shueyville, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, in Manor Care Health Services, Cedar Rapids. Services were held Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Shueyville United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Sheryll Untiedt with visitation at the church before the service. Burial was in Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone. Arrangements are by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her son, Brad Parsons of Swisher; brother, Donald Ray of Melrose; and sisters Mabel (John) Toepfer of Madrid and Gladys Groomes of Oakdale, Calif.
