Ardis Ruth Klein Schut

Ardis Ruth Klein Schut, 92 of Solon, died Sunday, July 5, 2009, at the Solon Nursing Care Center. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 21, at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Visitation will be half an hour prior to services at Brosh Chapel in Solon. A private family inurnment will follow Saturday, Aug. 22, in Pella. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Solon Care Center, Iowa City Hospice, and/or Solon Education Foundation (Schut Fund).


Robert Francis Mulherin

Robert Francis Mulherin, 66, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Aug. 15, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fairfax, by the Rev. Dustin Vu. A rosary service was held Friday at Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, with visitation held at the church. Robert is donating his body after funeral services to the University of Iowa Deeded Body program for teaching and research.


Anna Marie Miller

Anna Marie Miller, 89 of Solon, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral Mass was held Monday, Aug. 17 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon, with Fr. David Wilkening presiding. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation was held Sunday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where there was a 7 p.m. vigil. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.


Betty Ann Krug

Betty Ann Krug, 80, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, in Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Private services will take place. The Rev. Daniel Krueger of Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha will officiate. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is assisting the family.


William J. “Bill” Fulton

William J. “Bill” Fulton, 69, of North Liberty, died Sunday, August 9, 2009, at Mercy Hospice Care in Iowa City.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Iowa City Hospice.
Bill was born Nov. 26, 1939, in Iowa City, the son of Jesse and Laura (Kindl) Fulton.


Gary Lawrence Fink

Gary Lawrence Fink of Iowa City, died at his home, surrounded by his family, on Aug. 8, 2009, after a valiant struggle with cancer. A celebration of life and visitation for Gary was held at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City on Saturday, Aug. 15, with the Rev. Paul L. Akin presiding. A gathering time followed the service at the church. At his request he was cremated.


Gladys A. Carson

Gladys A. Carson, 89 of Ely, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha following a stroke. Services were held at St. John Lutheran Church with Rev. Jeff Borgwardt presiding. Burial followed in Anderson Cemetery in Swisher. Visitation was held Friday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW.


Nancy Maye Caraway

Nancy Maye Caraway, 68, of Marion, surrounded by family, song, and prayer, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, after her gracious battle with cancer. Services were held Thursday, Aug. 13, at the First Baptist Church-Church of the Brethren by Pastor Jim Goodrich. Visitation was held Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Burial was at Monmouth Cemetery, Monmouth.


Hawks give preview of coming season

I was jacked up for some Hawkeye football last Saturday.
I filled my cooler with food and liquids and headed into Kinnick about 9 a.m. for the 11 a.m. practice.
Of course I wasn’t the first one there but I found a great parking spot outside the stadium.
The lot starting filling up around 10 a.m. and then a line formed in front of the gates about 10:30 a.m.
I went in a little after 11 a.m. and the sun was baking down on the new prescription turf.

“I’ll Keep My Guns, Freedom And Money . . . You Can Keep The ‘Change,’” read a bumper sticker on a car I spotted in front of the grocery store recently.
Of the different sentiments Republicans try to express, it’s perhaps the one I can live with the most because at least it’s honest. I’m privileged, armed and I like it that way is so much more at the heart of conservatism than the smoke screen about family values.
Republicans have no lock on values, but are very strong on greed.
