Betty L. Parsons

Betty L. Parsons, 68, of Shueyville, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, in Manor Care Health Services, Cedar Rapids. Services were held Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Shueyville United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Sheryll Untiedt with visitation at the church before the service. Burial was in Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone. Arrangements are by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her son, Brad Parsons of Swisher; brother, Donald Ray of Melrose; and sisters Mabel (John) Toepfer of Madrid and Gladys Groomes of Oakdale, Calif.


Sheila (Burns) Kavanaugh

Sheila (Burns) Kavanaugh, 60, died July 21, 2009, in Portland, Maine, where services were held last week. She was buried at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cosgrove, on Sunday, Aug. 9, with a family graveside service, followed by a reception at the Cosgrove Church Hall.


Don J. Engelbart

Don J. Engelbart, 87, of Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehabilitation in Belle Plaine, formerly of Marion, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at the Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.


Margaret E. Eggenburg

Margaret E. Eggenburg, 76, of Iowa City, died on Sunday, August 2, 2009, at her home.
Margaret Bloyd Eggenburg was born on May 8, 1933, in Argyle, Iowa. She married Roger E. Eggenburg on June 11, 1950, in Muscatine. He preceded her in death.
Margaret worked at International Harvester, Moline, IL.
She loved to play cards. She attended the Faith Baptist Church, Iowa City.
Private inurnment will take place at the Grandview Cemetery, Grandview, Iowa.


Jocile M. Cilek

Jocile M. Cilek, 72, of Solon, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral Mass was held Monday, Aug. 10, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation was from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon where a 7 p.m. Vigil was held. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.
Jocile was born Feb. 19, 1937, the daughter of John and Alma (Serbousek) Stahle. She married David J. Cilek on Oct. 17, 1957, in Solon. Jocile worked at ACT for several years.


Ronald Leonard Breitwisch

Ronald Leonard Breitwisch, 56, of Marion, died at his home Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, from brain cancer. Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 8, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Marion by the Rev. Greg Williamson. Burial was at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Visitation was held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Friday.


An eye on the Hawks

For the next three weeks I’ll take a look at the Iowa Hawkeye football team.
Iowa has a lot of talent back from a 9-4 football team and it will be interesting if they can be as good or better than predicted.
Media day was last Friday and the Hawkeyes look ready to rumble and with a little help from my homeboys, Kelly Neustrom and Terry Intveld, we got some nice quotes and pictures.
This week I’ll look at the defense.

Bed and breakfast

While traveling, I like the concept of staying at a bed and breakfast, but I must admit to being a little leery of them at the same time.
I like to decide what and when I eat, so ceding control of a meal is one issue. Sometimes I don’t want a big breakfast, and often I like to have my morning repast as early as 6 a.m. And while one part of me likes being around fine and/or antique furniture, another part fears I’ll flatten a priceless chair by sitting in it or accidentally destroy some irreplaceable knickknack.

IOWA CITY– City Circle Acting Company of Coralville presents “Rent: School Edition” —the first event of the 2009-10 season—at the Englert Theatre Friday and Saturday, Aug. 7 and 8, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 9, 2 p.m.
This rock musical is an adapted version for high school students, omitting the song “Contact” and as well as eliminating some of the coarse language. City Circle is the first local theater to produce the student edition of this ground-breaking musical.
