Food for Thought

For the past three years, health problems and bad timing have prevented me from taking my usual mini-vacations to northwestern Iowa, where there is a little old house that my family uses as a home base for reunions and fishing trips. The surrounding area, including Palo Alto, Clay and Emmet counties, is close to Minnesota and, like Minnesota, contains many lovely glacial lakes (there must be at least a half dozen within a half hour's drive from the house).


Iowa v. Arizona

IOWA CITY– Iowa is 3-0... that sounds a lot better than 2-1, which could have been if Broderick Binns and Jeremiha Hunter didn’t block back-to-back field goals against UNI in the first game of the season.
Iowa’s 27-17 win over a good Arizona Wildcat team wasn’t flashy; it was more workman-like.
The defense stepped up, the offense was productive and Ryan Donahue is the early season MVP as a punter.


Walkin'

After fishing and a bike ride I took Mom and Dad out for dinner during a recent trip home.
I had to say dinner was for Dad’s 85th birthday to get them to go out at all, as they both are very frugal. Even as we headed out the door Mom offered to fry fish but we followed through anyway.

City moves forward with parks, trails plan

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty now has two new guiding documents.
The North Liberty City Council officially adopted both a plan for developing a connected trails network and a comprehensive plan for future development of its parks and green spaces at the Tuesday, Sept. 8 meeting.
Though the plans were both on the agenda for the Aug. 25 meeting, the trails plan was unanimously adopted while the parks plan was tabled, as council member Terry Donahue asked for an additional opportunity for the public to give input on both the documents.


Life on wheels isn't an an easy ride

NORTH LIBERTY– For North Liberty resident Joe Shepardson, a trip to the post office isn’t just a five-minute car ride. Going to the grocery store involves taking a circuitous route and braving the elements. Visiting City Hall requires accompaniment.
Shepardson was born with Cerebral Palsy, is legally blind and moves around in an electric wheelchair.
He is also educated, gainfully employed and eager to become involved in the North Liberty community.
