Food for Thought

I've never been very good at anything that resembles geography. That includes following a road map or finding an address in town. I also seem to have a poor sense of direction, which only magnifies the problem. I don't know if my sense of direction is inborn or learned, but it's pretty dismal. I learned the four main points of the compass when I was around 4 years old. My big sister told me that north was in the direction of the kitchen sink, south to the kitchen door, east on the wall where the refrigerator sat, and west toward the dining room.

Walkin'

I want a bomb
On our recent biking trip through Missouri, I noticed that bombs are a popular motif in outdoor decorating around the St. Louis airport area. I saw bombs welded into an archway in front of a war memorial, a bomb doubling as a sign accent and even a bomb as a fence post in a yard.
The welded bombs were about a foot and a half long. The biggest one spread about four feet and hung by stout chains below a sign reading “Military Surplus.” Customers walked underneath it on their way into the brick building. The bomb in the yard was somewhere in between in size.

A celebration of community

JOHNSON COUNTY– That a mere barn could inspire such awe, amazement and admiration would be hard for some to believe.
Until they see it for themselves.
“I’ve even had a couple people spontaneously weep,” said barn designer Dick Schwab.

JCHT seeks sponsors for annual fundraiser

Transit survey receives weak response

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council has reviewed the official report on a transit survey conducted by the City of North Liberty.
City Planner Dean Wheatley told the group last Tuesday, Aug. 11 that both the meager return and the respondents’ answers did not point toward a need for increased public transit in North Liberty at this time.
“Normally, with this kind of free-form survey, you see proponents load up and push for what they want,” Wheatley said. “This survey pretty much represents our current ridership.”

Kiesel granted Quit Claim deed

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council agreed to issue a Quit Claim deed to a local businessman last Tuesday, Aug. 11.
Bill Kiesel, owner and operator of MidAmerican Hobbies, sought a deed to a piece of property, less than 0.3 acres, adjacent to his current business property on 240th Street. According to Kiesel, the deed was part of a 2006 land agreement between himself and the city.

Girl Scouts recruiting new members at school events

IOWA CITY– While many are gearing up for the new school year in Iowa City and the surrounding area, Girl Scouts also is gearing up for a new membership year and is inviting girls to join the organization.
Girl Scouts is the premier leadership development program for girls ages 5-17. Dues are only $1 a month, providing real value when other programs for girls cost much more.
