Evelyn LaRene Kloubec

Evelyn LaRene Kloubec, 86 of Amana, died peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, at her home. Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 29, at Teahen-Walford Chapel, with Brosh Chapel-Cedar Rapids in charge of arrangements. Burial followed at the Hala Cemetery near Walford. Visitation was held Monday, Dec. 28, at the Teahen-Walford Chapel with Brosh Chapel-Cedar Rapids in charge of arrangements. Visitation was also held an hour prior to services Tuesday.


Eliot Aaron Keller

Eliot Aaron Keller, 62, of rural Iowa City, died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, from complications of Amyotropohic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or “Lou Gehrig’s disease”). Keller was president, treasurer and general manager of KZIA Inc., which owns and operates KZIA Z102.9, 102.9 HD-2, KGYM 1600 ESPN and 102.9 HD-3 in Cedar Rapids, serving the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City area.


Mary E. Keating

Mary E. Keating, 98, formerly of Iowa City, died peacefully Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at the Solon Nursing Care Center.
Funeral Mass was held Thursday, Dec. 31, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Rev. Rudy Juarez officiating. Burial with military honors was held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Visitation was held Wednesday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where the Catholic Daughters recited a rosary at 4:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service.


Lucy Hesseltine

Lucy Hesseltine, 91, of Parkview Home, Wayland, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at the Parkview Home in Wayland. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, Dec. 23, at the Cottonwood United Methodist Church in rural Wayland, with Pastor Linda Renken. Burial followed at the Cottonwood Cemetery. Visitation was held Dec. 22 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland. A memorial fund has been established for the Cottonwood United Methodist Church, Hospice and Parkview Home.


Edward L. Bleeker

Edward L. Bleeker, 81, of Shellsburg, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids. Services were held Saturday, Jan. 2, at Peace Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. Gary Brouwers. Visitation was Jan. 1 at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, and before services at the church.

Hawkeye Women 1-2

The Hawkeye women traveled to Penn State last week, played their hearts out and if the referees wouldn’t have swallowed their whistles at the end of the game…
Please don’t spread this around, but back in the '70s there was a show that I watched called “Eight is Enough.”
It was a sitcom about a family of eight that got together because the parents remarried.
It had a lot of stories about life and the different challenges that come up. The current Hawkeyes are going through some major challenges, like depth, but still show up and play hard.


Hawkeye wrestlers win third straight title

The Hawkeye wrestlers won their third straight Midlands title last week at Evanston, Illinois.
Iowa had three finalists; Matt McDonough (124), Brent Metcalf (149) and Jay Borschel (174).
It was good to see seniors Brent and Jay win championships, but for Matt, a redshirt freshman, the future looks good with his first title.
Nate Moore, another redshirt freshman wrestling at 133, finished sixth, losing to top-seeded Nick Fanthorpe from Iowa State, 2-1.
Sophomore Montell Marion also had a sixth-place finish and Derek St. John, a true freshman at 157, placed fifth wrestling unattached.

With all the predictions of a blizzard heading our way, we decided to postpone our departure for Denver and fly instead of drive. Tickets were expensive, but we opted to pay the price as we only visit Sabra’s family once a year. By the dire predictions of the meteorologists we didn’t have a chance of making it on the road, so we gambled on a chance by air.
