SOLON– The Lady Spartans gutted out a nail-biter against West Delaware last week to capture the WaMaC Tournament championship and move to 29-1 for the season.
According to Head Coach Kurt Trout, it’s the most wins in a season for a Solon varsity volleyball squad.
The Lady Spartans swept to the tourney title by defeating Central DeWitt, Benton Community and Waterloo Columbus at home Tuesday during pool play; then besting Western Dubuque and Marion in the championship bracket before a title tilt rematch with West Delaware.


Cornering the art market

ELY– A new art gallery and studio in Ely offers not just space for art, but a place where artistic spirits can soar.
It’s not entirely a new gallery; Ely Corner Art Studio and Gallery is a reincarnation of a dream.
The Shueyville Art Gallery opened just one year ago, at the crossroads in the center of the small Iowa community. The vision of Hal Hart, musician and abstract artist from Cedar Rapids, he created the gallery as a beautiful and welcoming space for regional artists to showcase their work.

Lifetouch will be back in the district for retakes Oct. 28. Tentatively times are Lakeview 8:30 a.m., MS 10:30 a.m., HS 1:30 p.m. Depending on number of retakes, they may be running ahead of schedule.


SIAC Meeting

The first SIAC (School Improvement Advisory Committee) meeting for this school year is being held on Thursday, Oct. 20, in the central office conference room, 6 p.m.


“My Fair Lady”

Solon High School will present the acclaimed Broadway musical “My Fair Lady” Nov. 10-13 in the Solon Community School District Auditorium.  Show times are 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday.
This year, the program will offer reserved seating.  Ticket prices are $6, $9 and $12 depending on the seat location; all levels may be reserved in advance of the show. Reserved tickets may be purchased in the high school commons on one of the following dates:
• Oct. 29: 8-10 a.m.
• Nov. 1, 3 and 8: 5-7 p.m.
• Nov. 9: 4-6 p.m.

Books for Troops boxes

The final 2011 shipment of Books for Troops boxes will be sent the first week of November to allow for extra time for holiday mail. The December boxes will be combined with November so there will be no December shipment. Any donations to be included in this final shipment must be at the library by Nov 1. Any donations left in the collection cans at the Legion must also be made by Nov. 1. Please be generous as we mail off the last eight boxes of the year. Needed for this shipment are poker chips, current release DVD movies or cash donations to purchase them.


Upcoming holiday events

• The Gingerbread House Workshop will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. Sign up at the circulation desk at the library. Registration will be one gingerbread house per family to decorate with space available for only 30 families. Registration will begin Oct. 18.
• Habitat for Humanity Tree Decorating Contest trees will again be displayed at the Solon Public Library. Entry forms are now available at the circulation desk. The library staff requests that trees be brought to the library no earlier than Nov. 10. All paid entries must be at the library by Nov. 15.


Halloween Costume Party

The Halloween costume party at the library is one of the biggest events and this year, staff is planning to make it even bigger and better. There will be trick or treating, crafts, games and refreshments. Plans are for the little ghosts and goblins to invade the library on Thursday evening, Oct. 27, at 6:30 p.m. Moms and Dads, put it on the calendar now and be sure not to miss it. Come in costume, enjoy a fun-filled evening and take home some treats.
