Ralph Thoren Sr.

Ralph L. Thoren Sr., 92, of Solon, died at home Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011. Services were held Oct. 24 at the Shueyville United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Tom Carver. Burial was at Shueyville Cemetery, with military rites.


Alene Seagren

Alene Fay Seagren, 96, of North Liberty, died peacefully Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, at Lantern Park Care Center in Coralville.
Memorial Services were held Oct. 30 at Grace Baptist Church in Emmetsburg, with Rev. Curt DeFord officiating. Graveside Services were held at Rush Lake Cemetery in Curlew. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Alene was born July 28, 1915, in Curlew, the daughter of Frank and Estella (Gross) Trow. On Sept. 4, 1934, Alene married Luvern “Squeek” Seagren in Swea City.


James Prymek

James “Smoe” Prymek, 52, Iowa City, died Oct. 21, 2011, at home peacefully after a short battle with cancer that was diagnosed Aug. 15, 2011.
Memorial Services were held Oct. 26 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, with Rev. Rebecca Carver officiating. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Dakota Prymek College Fund.
Smoe was born on Nov. 27, 1958, in Iowa City Iowa to Janet Kahler Prymek and Joseph Prymek. He lived in the local area all of his life.


Karen Biley

Karen (Broxey) Biley, 68, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, after a battle with cancer at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Visitation was Oct. 23 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. There will be no service.


Cindy Abraham

Cindy L. Abraham, 60, of Oxford, passed away Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Oct. 28 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories with Pastor Harlan Gillespie officiating.


Walkin'

Pearl is one miserable critter, and Buzz has become a pill-popping junkie lately.
On a walk in the woods recently, Pearl managed to stab herself while dashing around in the timber like the labradoodle she is. During our walks, especially the ones in the woods, her brain gets locked onto two words, “Oh boy!”
Something died over here, “Oh, boy!”
Something peed over there, “Oh, boy!”
Something moved, “Oh, boy!

Brisk Friday nights and high school football games take me right back to the early ‘50s when I often wore Mother’s sealskin coat to watch the Knoxville Panthers play.
