Solon Garden Club to meet Oct. 10

SOLON– The Solon Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at the Solon Public Library. We have lots to discuss during our business meeting, so please join us.


Our Lord’s Fall Festival Oct. 8

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church in Solon will host its seventh Annual Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 8, from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. A soup luncheon will start at 10:30 a.m. serving chili, chicken noodle, taco and potato soup, along with hot dogs and chili dogs. The bake sale, including Kolaches, cookies, bars, some candy and other member specialties, starts at 8:30 a.m. Also available are crafts and a collection of new dolls (valued at $35 and up, they will make nice gifts for $10 each or two for $17).


Solon Habitat for Humanity holding Annual Tree Decoration Contest

SOLON– Solon Community Habitat for Humanity is holding its seventh Annual Tree Decoration Contest.
The contest is open to all individuals, families, clubs and businesses in the community. Entry sheets and rules can be picked up at the Solon Public Library until Nov. 12.
Decorated trees need to be at the library no later than Nov. 15, with a $5 entry fee.
New this year, trees will be judged by the Tree Committee. The Solon Community will vote for the Humanity Award until Dec. 3, 2011.
Prizes are given to first, second, third, and Humanity Award.


Solon youth basketball league now accepting registrations

SOLON– Registration for the Solon Parks and Recreation girls youth basketball league is now open. The program will run Nov. 5-Dec. 17 and will be offered to grades third through sixth. Registration forms can be found online at www.solon-iowa.com or at the Solon City Office. Registration runs through Oct. 14. Games will be played on Saturday mornings in Solon, Mt. Vernon or Lisbon.


Rural Solon man charged with Solon Drug robbery

SOLON– A rural Solon man has been charged with first degree robbery after displaying a knife and demanding prescription drugs at a Solon pharmacy.
According to a Johnson County Sheriff’s Department complaint, Gregory J. Engrav, 36, of 4143 245th St. NE, Solon, was arrested after he was identified by an employee at Solon Drug.


Home businesses code to be reviewed

JOHNSON COUNTY– In October, the extensions on conditional use permits for Dick Schwab’s Celebration Barn and Mary Ellen Hill’s Gazebo on the Green will end.
The attention garnered by the two rural business ventures in this corner of Johnson County has had people wondering; what’s acceptable practice when carrying out a business in the unincorporated areas of the county?
For most, the answer lies somewhere in the county’s written code. For these two businesses, with their unique services offered in distinctive settings, the code lacks clarity.


Can drive for Solon Middle School show choir Oct. 8

SOLON– The Solon Middle School show choir will be hosting a can drive to raise funds for its program. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Cans can be dropped off at Ruzicka’s Meat Processing or you may call 319-310-7031 if cans need to be picked up.


Solon American Legion pork and dumpling supper Oct. 8

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will hold a pork and dumpling supper on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Solon American Legion, serving from 5-7:30 p.m.
Dinner includes tender roasted pork, homemade dumplings, dressing and gravy, sauerkraut, bread with butter, dessert and coffee or lemonade. The cost is $9 for adults, $4 for children (6-12), and, as always, children under five eat free.

SOLON- Laser technology has landed in Solon, coming to both sides of Highway 1 this past spring.
