Hawk Talk

It’s a good time for Iowa to have a bye week as they can heal up and get ready for a road trip to Penn State and the start of the Big Ten season.
The Hawks have played one-third of their season, but I’m going to hand out midterm grades for the offense, defense and special teams.

Offense
The Hawkeyes go into the bye week averaging 37.8 points per game on offense.
I know they played Tennessee Tech and Louisiana Monroe (ULM) but they scored 41 against Iowa State in overtime and 31 against Pittsburgh.


Wanda Smith

Wanda L. (Mrs. Ezra) Smith, 85, of Washington, Iowa, died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, at the Halcyon House in Washington following a lengthy illness.
Celebration of life service was held Sept. 26 at the United Methodist Church in Washington with Pastor Jim Stiles officiating.
She is survived locally by daughter Carol Alber and husband Michael of North Liberty.


Jeff Semler

Jeff D. Semler, 33, of Iowa City, died at his home Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011.
Funeral service was held Sept. 26 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, with Rev. Mark Kukkonen officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
Jeff was born Sept. 28, 1977, in Iowa City, the son of Benny and Judy (Fuhrmeister) Semler. He was a 1998 graduate of City High School.


Mabel Hobart

Mabel E. Hobart, 81, of Iowa City, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, at the Solon Nursing Care Center.
Funeral services were held Sept. 29, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Mabel’s memory. Online condolences may be sent for her family at www.gayandciha.com.


Beulah Brady

Beulah Marjorie Brady, 79, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Greeley, died at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha on Friday, Sept. 23, 2011. Funeral services were held Sept. 26, at United Methodist Church in Greeley, with Pastor Ruth Tibbott officiating. Burial was at Grant View Cemetery, Greeley.
She was born Jan. 4, 1932, in rural Clayton County near Millville, Iowa, the daughter of Howard and Elga (Welch) Tindell. Beulah was raised and educated in the Oneida, Colesburg, and Greeley areas, and was a 1950 Greeley High School graduate.


Osmond Berry Jr.

Osmond “Ozzie” R. Berry Jr., 81, of Ely, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Services were held Sept. 29, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial followed in First Presbyterian Church Cemetery, near Ely.


Walkin'

After three days of exploring St. Genevieve , Mo., we headed to Illinois to visit with my older brother, Brad, and his spouse Marilyn.
They have a lovely house on the shore of Lake of Egypt and we spent our first evening cruising about on their pontoon boat. After a record flooding in the spring, the area was in the final splash of a heat wave by the time we arrived in late August. At the peak, the water in the lake had reached 100 degrees!


Food For Thought

I remember the days when there was always a sign near the cash register at the grocery store that said CASH AND CARRY. As a child, I thought that meant that you had to pay CASH for your groceries and CARRY them out to the car yourself. At least, that’s what happened when I went to the store with my mother. She handed the grocer her list, he gathered up the items and figured the total while we waited. He’d pack them all into a brown paper bag or a cardboard box and we were on our way. Sometimes Mother paid him and sometimes he wrote it all down in a little tablet.
