Hawk Talk

It’s probably not a good sign when Penn State is favored by three or four points all week and yet everyone, including Kirk Herbstreit, one of the top football commentators on ESPN, is picking Iowa.
Another bad omen was how many times the ball bounced Penn State’s way, especially in the first half.
There were at least five times that the Nittany Lions got a friendly bounce.


Selma Johnston

Selma Marguerite Johnston, 90, of Anamosa, passed away at home on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, surrounded by family. A celebration of life along with a private internment will be held at a later date. Iowa Cremation is assisting the family.
She is survived locally by sister-in-law Betty Eden of North Liberty;
Selma Marguerite Klinefelter, the daughter of Lowell Clifford and Susan (Jones) Klinefelter was born on July 15, 1921, near Morley. She attended Morley school. Selma and Howard Johnston were married in 1940 and later divorced.


Darlene Klinsky

Darlene Y. (Hickey) Klinsky, 79, of Marion, formerly of Ely, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital. Services were held Oct. 4 at St. John Lutheran Church, Ely, with the Rev. Marvin Mueller presiding. Burial followed in Rogers Grove Cemetery, near Ely.


Michael Deutmeyer

Michael Deutmeyer, 41, of Worthington, Iowa, died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, as a result of a farming accident in rural Dyersville.
Services were held on Oct. 3 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Worthington, with burial in St. Francis Cemetery, Dyersville. The Rev. Dennis Quint officiated.
Local survivors include his sister, Tammy (Carl) Ronnebaum of North Liberty; and nieces and nephews, Morgan and Clair Ronnebaum.

Dale S. Bingham

Dale S. Bingham, 87, died Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) following an extended illness.
The family greeted friends Thursday, Oct. 6, from 4-7 p.m. at Lensing’s Oak Hill, Coralville. Memorial Services were held Oct. 7 at the Unitarian Universalist Society, Iowa City, with Rev. Steven Protzman officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Wilcox Cemetery near Viola, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Unitarian Universalist Society or the University of Iowa Foundation for Pulmonary Rehab at UIHC.


Walkin'

The manifestations took many forms.
At first, I thought it was only one benign ghost giving us the creeps but as time wore on I realized that there were just too many strange things going on in the apartment to be explained by one ghost or spirit or entity.
For starters, we, my daughters and I, just felt we were being watched. It was creepy, but not scary like a snake or spider. In an odd way it could be comforting, a feeling that you were not alone and even being protected.


Food For Thought

I recently read (RE-read) a delightful book by Kasey Michaels, “Maggie Needs An Alibi,” about an author whose characters come to life and move into her apartment with her, complicating her life and helping her solve a murder (after a fashion). I admit that, the first time I read a book, I read just for the plot. I want to find out how it ends. The next time, I read it with a little more appreciation for the WAY the writer tells the story. I take notice of the way the story is organized and events presented.

Dubuque Street Trail grand opening Friday

NORTH LIBERTY– On Friday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m., the North Liberty City Council and the Johnson County Board of Supervisors will host the grand opening of the Dubuque Street Trail project. This event celebrates the official opening of the bicycle and pedestrian trail connection from Iowa City along Dubuque Street to the north city limits of North Liberty.

West volleyball rises to number one spot

IOWA CITY– West High coach Kathy Bresnahan wants her Women of Troy to be in the top two or three teams in Class 4A, and so far she has her wish. The West High ladies rose to number one in the Sept. 28, weekly rankings by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, rising ahead of rival City High.


Tough guys wear pink

TIFFIN– Last year, it was pink socks and cleats in an attempt to help a member of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) family. This year, the varsity football team, coaches and fans wore pink for the greater community affected by cancer during its Friday night game against the Grinnell Tigers.
