Two to tangle in Tiffin mayoral race

TIFFIN– The incumbent mayor has a challenger.
Voters in Tiffin will decide on Tuesday, Nov. 8, who will occupy the mayor’s seat as incumbent Royce W. Phillips faces Steve Berner. The Tiffin Fire Station is the polling place and will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Both men were presented with a set of three questions by the Leader and asked to respond. Following are the questions and each candidate’s replies:

Ward system on NL’s Nov. 8 ballot

NORTH LIBERTY– This Nov. 8, North Liberty voters will face just two ballot questions in the city election; related, but very different.
It is essential that voters understand the distinction before penciling in those ovals.
First, there are three open seats on the North Liberty City Council. Incumbents Coleen Chipman, Terry Donahue and Chris Hoffman are all seeking re-election, with newcomer Matt Zacek also putting his hat into the ring. Voters will be asked to pick three of the four to represent the public for the next four years.


Another young life lost

TIFFIN– It’s a nightmare scenario: one student dead, seven injured. For the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district and its communities, this was a nightmare nobody could wake up from.
CCA freshman Mackenzie Lown, 14, was killed Monday night, Oct. 17, in a two-vehicle collision on US Highway 6 near Half Moon Road near Tiffin. A 1996 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Zach Swenka, 18, of North Liberty, was eastbound on Highway 6 when it collided with a 2010 Honda Odyssey minivan being driven by Bryan Cooling, 47, of Oxford.


Spooky mini golf fun October 29 to benefit Miracles in Motion

CEDAR RAPIDS– On Saturday, Oct. 29, fun seekers can get their fix for a cause at the Miracles in Motion Spooktacular Mini Golf FUNdraiser. The benefit event for all ages takes place at Airport National Golf Course, 3001 Wright Brothers Blvd. E SW, Cedar Rapids, rain or shine, with tee times from 11 a.m. through 2 p.m. Get details and register now at www.miraclesinmotion.net. Everyone is encouraged to wear a costume so they can get a treat. An appearance of the Miracles in Motion miniature horses is expected.

Solon takes district title from Tigers

GRINNELL– The game was still up in the air as the fourth quarter began.
Junior Tim Lance had recovered two Grinnell fumbles and returned them both for touchdowns in the first quarter, but Solon was hanging onto a 21-14 lead as the third quarter expired.
Spartans on both sides of the ball showed up big in the final frame, however, with a field goal, a touchdown and an interception to ice a win in Grinnell Friday night, 31-14.
Both Grinnell and Solon entered the game with a single non-conference loss, and the road win gave the Spartans outright ownership of the District 6 title in Class 3A.


Boys finish fifth, miss trip to state

ANAMOSA– No return ticket to the state this year.
A surge from Mount Vernon-Lisbon, Fort Madison and Marion sent those three boys cross country teams to the Oct. 29 Class 3A state meet. Solon and Xavier battled for the fourth and fifth spots in the 15-school qualifier at Anamosa.


On to state meet for cross country girls

ANAMOSA– Solon’s girls will move on to the state tournament after winning the Oct. 20 district cross country title and dusting top-ranked Davenport Assumption on the way.
The 74-runner field was led by junior Lauren Benzing, who– again– broke the 4 kilometer course record around Central Park Lake near Anamosa. The next runner was nearly a minute behind.


Younkers Community Day Booklets

The Spanish Club is selling Younkers Community Day booklets to help fund the Panama trip. The cost of a booklet is $5. It includes a $10 off coupon, a 20 percent off shopping pass and a 30 percent off early bird coupon. Customers can select merchandise beginning Sunday, Nov. 6, (with community days being Nov. 11 and 12). No waiting in lines. All booklet sales benefit the Panama student travelers. High School Art Show

Solon High School Art students will be displaying their work in an upcoming exhibition to be held Nov. 10-13, at Solon Middle School. There will be a selection of two-dimensional work in both traditional and digital media as well as an arrangement of ceramics. Artwork will be located in the lobby outside of the auditorium for viewing before and after performances of this year’s High School musical, “My Fair Lady.”
