Snow day

OXFORD– Denise Schares gets a lot of questions.
As the superintendent of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district, she is frequently approached by students, parents, faculty and staff. Of all the questions she addresses, however, one stands out as the most frequently asked.
“How do you decide to call a snow day?”
It’s not an easy decision, with potential ramifications either way, and regardless of the final call, somebody won’t be happy with it.


No change to North Liberty government

NORTH LIBERTY– City government remains status quo in North Liberty.
Reelected to the North Liberty City Council were Coleen Chipman, Terry Donahue and Chris Hoffman, the three incumbents who ran for three open seats.
Hoffman was the top vote getter, with 68 percent of total votes cast in the Nov. 8 election. Chipman was a close second, with 66 percent, and Donahue followed with 61 percent. Candidate Matt Zacek, the fourth person to put in a bid for one of the open positions, garnered 51 percent of all votes. There were 30 write-in votes.


Tiffin fire department gets rare controlled burn opportunity

TIFFIN– It was a windy Sunday morning when Tiffin volunteer firefighters struck the spark that set Terry Potter’s boyhood home aflame.
But weekend or not, calm or blustery, those are the conditions which firefighters must deal with in emergencies, and that’s why Tiffin Fire Department chief Brian Detert wanted to proceed with the controlled burn on Sunday, Nov. 6.
“This was the only day that fit into our schedule,” said Detert, “and it’s a good opportunity to practice exposure protection in the wind.”


Berner upends Phillips in Tiffin

TIFFIN— The 2011 Tiffin city council election brought out 324 people, or 26.78 percent, of the 1,210 eligible voters. However, those who did vote handed Steve Berner a decisive win over incumbent Royce W. Phillips in the mayoral race. Berner received 195 votes (61 percent) to Phillips’ 127 (39 percent). Phillips has been Mayor of Tiffin since January 2008.


Pet Memories Accessories opens in Solon

SOLON- There’s a time in every pet owner’s life when they have to say goodbye to a friend that’s been a big part of the family. Pet Memories of Tipton and Pet Memories Accessories, now open in Solon, has funerary needs for almost any animal, and they’ve seen a lot, including dogs, cats, horses, birds, rabbits, goats, llamas, ferrets, pigs, skunks, and snakes.
Pet Memories have a full funeral-home menu of services, including grief counseling, burial garden sites, pre-need planning, cremation or interment, caskets and markers, and home or veterinary office pick-up within a 150-mile radius.

SOLON– They run for the health of it.
Also, they run for the challenge, the camaraderie and the fun of it.
Solon girls in grades three through six are on the run– literally– as participants in the international program, Girls on the Run.

CEDAR RAPIDS– It’s never happy news when the season ends with a loss.
The Solon Lady Spartans took a 32-1 record into the State Volleyball Tournament last week, but exited 100 minutes later after a five-set, topsy-turvy rollercoaster opening round match against No. 9 Union of LaPorte City.
“I was sorry, but all in all, this was truly a season for the record books,” said Head Coach Kurt Trout. The Lady Spartans collected the most wins in Solon volleyball history, captured the school’s first WaMaC district title and the team’s first-ever appearance at the state tournament.

Coed volleyball signup underway through Nov. 21

SOLON– Solon Co-ed Volleyball starts Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the Solon Middle School gym for “A” and “B” Leagues. First games start at 6:30 p.m.
To register your team or find a team call: “A” League - Kalms at 624-2238, “B” League – B. Young at 530-3187.
League registration is due by Nov. 21.


Adult yoga to be offered this winter in Solon

SOLON– The Solon Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce that it is accepting registrations for an adult yoga class this winter. A five-week introductory course will be offered twice a week in December and January. Yoga is a great way to improve your overall health and helps an individual stay fit during the cold winter months. Yoga classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
