Hawk Talk

1989... that was the last time Michigan State defeated Iowa at Kinnick Stadium.
Hayden Fry was the football coach, Tom Davis the men’s basketball coach, Vivian Stringer the women’s basketball coach and a guy named Dan Gable ran the wrestling program… what a lineup.
I was at that game the Spartans won 17-14 in ‘89.
The Hawks opened the 1989 season with a 44-6 loss to Oregon at home and ended losing three out of the last four, the last one to Minnesota at Kinnick, 43-7. I remember fans booing at the end of the game.

Walkin'

The basement was one of the scarier places I worked.
In the 20 years I ran the newspaper, I moved the office several times up and down Main, always ready to find a cheaper location. A small town weekly newspaper is at the bottom of the food chain, and I was on constant vigil to make or save a buck.

Food For Thought

One of my favorite times of year, for a good many years, was early fall when the apples in our orchard were ready for picking. My dad, having set out to raise most of the food his family needed, planted not only big gardens, but all kinds of berry bushes, grapes, and fruit trees. At one time, the acreage on the very edge of town had been part of a large commercial cherry orchard. Oddly, by time Dad bought the property, there was not a single cherry tree left on it. There were several large black walnut trees and a small grove of about six pear trees.

Medals for their mettle

NORTH LIBERTY– Volunteer firefighters with the North Liberty Fire Department combined training with fun on Sunday, Oct. 23, during the department’s second annual Medal Day. Ten firefighters split into two teams to compete in timed events simulating common but critical fire ground skills.
North Liberty’s bravest put on Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), took on an engine company drill, a truck company drill and practiced setting up the department’s 75-foot aerial ladder. Teams that performed the tasks in the least amount of time received medals and bragging rights.

Trojans’ final game goes to the ‘dogs

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– With apologies to Frank Sinatra, that’s life. You’re riding high on Monday only to be shot down on Friday.
The West High Trojan football season came to a crashing end Friday night, Nov. 4, at the hands of the Bettendorf Bulldogs in a Class 4A quarterfinal. A win would have sent Coach Brian Sauser’s crew to the UNI-Dome.
