Hills Bank donates more than $18,500 to Iowa City schools

HILLS– The Classroom Cash program from Hills Bank recently donated $18,606.23 to the Iowa City Community School District Foundation. This funding benefits the foundation’s Excellence Fund, which provides annual grants to the schools. Classroom technology, visiting authors and illustrators, literacy materials, music programs and field trips are just a few examples of learning opportunities supported through the Excellence Fund.


South Slope seeks input from customers

NORTH LIBERTY– South Slope Cooperative Communications is conducting focus groups led by Strategic America as part of an initiative to better understand its customers, their telecommunication behaviors and pricing perspectives. Focus groups are just one of a number of ways in which South Slope is seeking the input of residential customers, business customers, and customer prospects.

Three CCA softball athletes sign to play at Division I colleges

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School congratulated three athletes who signed their Division I NCAA Softball letters of intent, on Wednesday Nov. 9, at CCA High School in Tiffin. Mariah McKinnon signed with Drake University, Fran Strub with Northwestern University and Caitlin Wnek with the University of Northern Iowa.
All three athletes were instrumental in leading CCA to the Class 3A State Softball Title last summer.


Marching Clippers mop up at Marion Invitational

MARION– On Saturday, Sept. 24, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Marching Clippers opened their competitive season with two competitions in Marion. The day began at the Linn-Mar Marching Band Festival at the brand new Armstrong Field. The Marching Clippers took the field at 11:45 a.m. with a performance of their show “Phobias- So What Are You Afraid Of?” Marching Band director John Smith said, “We performed well, we just need more energy.” The band placed seventh out of nine bands competing in the 3A division with a score of 68.

AMANA– On Saturday, Oct. 1, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Marching Clippers took their show on the road, first performing in the annual Octoberfest Parade in Amana, then heading north to Cedar Rapids for the 28th annual Five Seasons Invitational Marching Band Festival at Kingston Stadium.
“The bus was literally smoking its way up 380 when the driver decided he couldn’t go on,” said CCA Fine Arts and Music Enhancers member David Raim. “Luckily they got a replacement bus and made it to the festival in plenty of time.”


Waffle breakfast leaves no leftovers

NORTH LIBERTY– Turnout for the North Liberty Community Library’s annual Waffle Breakfast and Craft Sale fundraiser was a little lean this year.
Library Director Dee Crowner said the Oct. 8 event usually averages around 300 attendees; this year, only about 100 people came to load up on the all-you-can-eat, homestyle waffles whipped up by Dad’s Belgian Waffles of Algona.
The dip in attendance was due to a power outage, said Crowner.


CCA thespians go “Up the Down Staircase”

TIFFIN— In the late 1960s a former New York City school teacher wrote a novel titled “Up the Down Staircase.” In it, she told the often humorous, sometimes dramatic, trials and tribulations of an enthusiastic, optimistic and idealistic new teacher in her first year in an under-staffed, over-crowded NYC school. The book, chronicling her battles with apathy, self-doubt and bureaucracy, became a best-seller and was turned into a movie and play.
On December 1, 2 and 3, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Drama Department will present Christopher Sergel’s theatrical adaptation of Bel Kaufman’s novel.


Green light for garden gazebo

NEWPORT ROAD- Gazebo on the Green, the garden tour and wedding spot that has been in a holding pattern for months, has been granted a 12-month extension to host weddings.
Owner Mary Ellen Hill said she typically hosts 10 weddings on her 33 acres with over a dozen different gardens, woods and prairies that attract tourists and bridal parties who walk through the fields, shade and flower gardens each season. Her garden is also used for afternoon teas, baby and bridal showers.
