Hills Bank donates more than $2,250 to area schools

HILLS– The Classroom Cash program from Hills Bank recently donated $2,002.08 to the Clear Creek Amana School Foundation, and $278.56 to Heritage Christian School. These funds will be used to support programs and services which enhance student educational experiences.


2012 hunting, fishing licenses on sale Dec. 15

DES MOINES– Iowa hunting and fishing licenses for 2012 will go on sale Dec. 15. The 2011 licenses are valid through Jan. 10, 2012.
Nonresident hunting and fishing licenses go on sale Jan. 1, 2012. Nonresident 2011 licenses are valid through Dec. 31.

IOWA CITY— The West High Trojans under the leadership of Coach Mark Reiland traveled across town Thursday night, Dec. 8, to take on rival City High in a dual meet.
The JV squad opened the night with a 51-18 win while the varsity crew closed the dual 57-15.

The Englert Theatre celebrates the holidays Dec. 15

IOWA CITY– The Englert Theatre will host the annual “Festival of Carols” on Thursday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. Celebrate the holidays with hot cocoa, sing-a-longs, and a visit by Santa.
Hosted by Englert Development Director Katie Roche, “Festival of Carols” will feature special performances by the Old Capitol Chorus and Ghrá na Gaeilge Irish Dancers
The event is free and open to the public, no tickets necessary. “Festival of Carols” is made possible through a contribution by Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Services.


Pantry hunting for deer

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s that time of year, and hunting season is well underway. According to a 2011 family survey, fresh or frozen meats are the most sought after items at the North Liberty Community Pantry. The pantry is now seeking hunters willing to donate an extra deer to the pantry. The goal is to receive 10-15 deer processed for the holiday season. Bud’s Custom Meats in Riverside has agreed to process deer for $50 on behalf of the pantry. The pantry is also accepting donations of cows and hogs for the purpose of providing fresh meat to its clients.


What to do with the old soft shoe

OXFORD— When the Parent-Teacher Group (PTG) at Clear Creek Elementary (CCE) went looking for a community service project, they selected a shoe drive. However this shoe collection has an interesting twist to it.
Or should we say, it has a grind to it.


Keep up with H.S. studies

IOWA CITY– In 2009, a board-appointed high school task force came up with a recommendation to build an additional high school when it is financially feasible to build and operate one. The students are almost there, but finances are up for debate.
So the district has tinkered with school boundaries and changed its high school enrollment rules, trickling students out of crowded neighborhoods.
