June Book Club

The June meeting of the Solon Book Club will be member’s choice. Each may read a biography or autobiography of their choice and share a synopsis with the group. The last meeting before summer hiatus will be Tuesday, June 21, at 6:30 p.m. so there’s plenty of time to pick a biography. After a break for the summer, the Solon Area Book Club will resume in September.

Garage sale deadline soon

Deadlines are quickly approaching for the Solon Area Garage Sale day, June 4.  Registration deadline is 5 p.m. on Saturday May 28, or when we reach 80 registrations.  Registrations will come in quickly during the week of the May 23, so don’t delay– get your spot on the map secured now. If you have donations for the Friends of the Library’s sale on June 4, please have those items to the library no later than June 1 to give volunteers time to sort and price them.  No clothing items, please.

Movie Clips

Just in to the DVD collection is “The Green Hornet” (2011,PG13), the latest comic book-based Hollywood movie about Britt Reid, who teams up with his late dad’s assistant Kato to become a masked crime fighting team.   “Country Strong” (2010, PG13) is a drama centered on a rising country-music songwriter who sparks with a fallen star (Gweneth Paltrow).

Are you ready for the book sale?

The Friends of the Library is gearing up for its annual Memorial Day Weekend Used Book Sale with over 7,000 items offered at extremely reasonable prices. Most items are priced at 25 cents to 50 cents. The three-day event will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 28. For all the shoppers waiting for the doors to open, admission is free with no early bird admission charge. The sale will run through 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 28. Sunday, May 29, times are 7 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and Monday, May 30, will be a clearance sale with 10 items for $1 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Meal and a Movie moves to May 20

SOLON– The Senior Advocate Meal and a Movie will be held Friday, May 20, as the last Friday of the month, May 27, is the Solon Friends of the Library Book Sale at the library. The movie will be “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” Savvy Coffee and Wine Bar will provide chicken and noodles and carrot cake. Call 624-2710 or sign up at Old Gold Dining.

Card shower to honor retirees

SOLON– There will be a card shower honoring retiring High School Principal Bob Lesan and Special Education Instructor Kathy Brenneman. Anyone wishing to share stories or cards of appreciation for their years of service are encouraged to do so by June 1. Poppy Days in Solon May 21-30

SOLON– Each year the American Legion Auxiliary distributes poppies made by disabled or hospitalized veterans. All monies received are used for veterans’ programs and their families.
Containers will be in various businesses around town to receive your donations. Thank you for your generosity. Wear a poppy! Remember those who died in service to our country and all servicemen and women.

A reel expert who can tackle anything

SOLON– Cast your eyes upon these custom rods, and you just might land a real beauty.
Solon resident and avid angler Scott Kleppe has put his passion for fishing into the equipment, building top quality custom fishing rods for the best personal angling experience possible.
Kleppe, Solon’s Public Works Director, has fished all his life. After entering a few local bass fishing tournaments, Kleppe decided he would like to try his hand at the equipment associated with the sport of fishing.

School board approves raise for district staff

SOLON– The Solon School board wrapped up another negotiation process with its faculty last Monday, May 9, unanimously approving a 3.96 percent pay raise next year for the district’s staff.
The raise was part of the master contract that must be approved every year after negotiations are conducted between the Solon Board of Education and the Solon Education Agency, which is the local organization that represents district staff in negotiations.
