Cooper steps down

IOWA CITY– It was a short announcement at the very end of the school board meeting, but it could have a long-term effect on the board’s future decisions.
Board member Mike Cooper announced during the final moments of the Iowa City school board meeting Tuesday that he will be stepping down effective June 30.
Cooper, Vice President of National Services for Pearson, said he would still be able to maintain his current position while moving to Minneapolis to spend more time with family members who live there.


North Bend, North Central students and staff plant trees for energy efficiency

NORTH LIBERTY– “It blows out here even when the wind isn’t blowing,” said North Bend Elementary Principal Brenda Parker as she looked toward the expanse north and west of the Clear Creek Amana school in North Liberty. In the winter, strong northwest winds buffet the school building and often fill the faculty parking lot with snow.
But, thanks to a unique partnership and a little effort on the part of the students and staff, relief should be coming within the next few years.


Housing Accessibility Project to make ramps available

IOWA CITY– Johnson County Livable Community has launched HAP (Housing Accessibility Project) with a mission to provide access to homes in Johnson County, in an affordable, timely manner. The major focus of HAP is the construction of ramps. Making minor repairs for safety or adding safety features like grab bars or handrails will be considered on a case by case basis. Mobile homes however are eligible for ramps only.
The major partners in the coalition are: Access2Independence, Carpenters Local 1260, Elder Services Inc. and Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity.


Getting to State: Only half the battle

A strong regional performance is one thing. Solon not only moves up to Class 3A this season, but has to battle seven other regional champions, as well as the rest of the field for points at State. Tops in the field may be Dubuque Wahlert. Mount Vernon-Lisbon is the defending Class 3A champ, though Solon has beaten them a couple of times. “They have some of the top individuals and relays; they can count on scoring high. They have the experienced runners that are used to being there,” noted Solon Coach Brent Sands.


Ely First Presbyterian Vacation Bible School

ELY– First Presbyterian Church near Ely invites area children to participate in Vacation Bible School (VBS) every Sunday in June from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., plus a family campout on Saturday night, June 25.


Solon boys’ golf gets back on par at WaMaC

SOLON– The Solon boys’ golf team grabbed the WaMaC East Division title on May 2, edging the competition by four strokes at the WaMaC Divisional Tournament held at Lake Macbride Golf Course.
The win for the Spartans comes after a frustrating week of play that involved four meets.


Spartans claim District Track title

MT. PLEASANT– The Solon boy’s track team won the District Meet held last Thursday, May 12, over host school Mount Pleasant by the closest of margins, winning the team title by one point.
The Spartans used team balance to win, scoring in all but one event, and placing in the top four in 14 of the 18 contested events.


Lady Spartans knock off three at home

Track & Field Day May 24

The annual Track & Field Day will be held on May 24. Third and fourth graders will participate from 8:45-11:15 a.m. and 5th/6th will begin at 1 p.m.  The new track is located north of the high school. Rain date is Thursday, May 26.

Senior Graduation

A letter has been sent to all senior parents with complete information regarding graduation; commencement ticket information, graduate’s practice schedule, academic expectations, fees, etc.  Payment for the senior luncheon following commencement practice and class flower for the graduation ceremony will be due no later than Friday, May 20– payable to Solon Schools. Also, all fees must be taken care of before you check out.
Reminder - cap/gown/stole/tassel and tickets for floor seating will be handed out to graduates at practice following the senior meal on Thursday, May 26.
