Donald Oberbroeckling, 81, of Garnavillo, died Thursday, May 19, 2011, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. Funeral services were held May 24 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Interment was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Garnavillo.

Edward Gruwell, 78, of North Liberty, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2011, at his home in North Liberty.
Visitation was held May 24 at Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City. Memorials can be directed to the “Edward Gruwell memorial fund.”
Edward was born April 8, 1933, in Cedar County, the son of Francis and Freda (Pedersen) Gruwell.
Edward was an electrician all of his life.

I keep hearing statements that, at first, seem to be perfectly logical but, upon reflection, don’t make sense at all. A month or two ago, I heard two vastly different films touted as “classics.” One was a new animated movie which was described as being “a new seasonal classic” and the other was Ken Burns’ documentary about the Civil War. I find it difficult to believe that two such diverse films have enough in common to be described by the same adjective.

IOWA CITY– Let the Johnson County Historical Society (JCHS) be your guide to summer fun in 2011! A camp rooted in the history and cultural heritage of Johnson County, Little School on the Prairie, will be hosted at the 1876 Coralville Schoolhouse. With camps focused on having fun and learning, campers will enjoy exploring the history of the community that they live in.
Little School on the Prairie focuses on what life was like in the mid-to-late 1800s at both home and school; the camp offers a unique perspective to campers on normal everyday life for kids 120-150 years ago.

SOLON– It was Senior Night for the Spartans last Thursday as they hosted their friendly rivals, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers in a varsity/JV match. The seniors, indeed the bulk of the Spartan bench, shined in an 8-2 hammering of the Clippers.
“It was a great night,” Spartan Coach Jeremy McMurrin said of the win which improved Solon’s record to 13-2. The Spartans had already taken co-champion status in the East Division of the WaMaC, and were ranked fourth in Class 1A heading toward post-season play.
