James Eastwood, Sr.

James L. Eastwood, Sr., 76, died Monday, July 4, 2011, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following an extended illness.
Funeral services were held July 8 at Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton, with Pastor Larry Rodgers officiating. Interment was at Salem Cemetery in Van Horne, with graveside military rites conducted by Emil H. Dutler American Legion Post #177 of Mount Auburn. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived locally by his brother, Leo Dale Eastwood of Solon.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Elizabeth Clarke

Elizabeth L. Clarke, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died July 6, 2011, at Living Center East following an extended illness. Funeral services were held July 8 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial was at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Surviving locally is a son, Robert Freeman and wife, Barb of Swisher.


Debra Bruce

Debra Lynn Bruce, 54, of North Liberty, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. A celebration of life service was held July 8 at New Beginnings Church, Hiawatha. Pastor Chris Richards officiated, with inurnment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Food For Thought

Every summer, until I graduated from high school, I was sent off to spend two weeks at my maternal grandparents’ farm. I suppose it started around the time my dad went into the, then, Army Air Force in 1942 or ‘43, I really can’t remember. It seems as though I had gone there every summer since my birth, but I expect that would have been a little too much to ask of my grandma.

West baseball slaughters Waterloo East

IOWA CITY — It was Trojan vs. Trojan as West High entertained the Trojans of Waterloo East Friday night for a varsity double header. The home Trojans trounced their guests 11-0 and 12-1 in a pair of five-inning efforts.
West put up two runs in the bottom of the first inning of the opener, six in the second, and three in the third; scoring on 14 hits while leaving five on base. Waterloo only had one hit and committed a trio of errors while leaving nobody stranded.


Swept away

SOLON — Conventional wisdom would have had the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity baseball team sunk quickly by the Spartans of Solon.
Conventional wisdom would’ve been wrong.
A much improved Clipper squad sailed into Solon Friday evening for a doubleheader against their friendly rivals to the east. Although the Spartans triumphed, the Clippers fought through both games to fall 9-3 and 13-7.


CCA baseball drops two to V-S

TIFFIN — The Vikings of Vinton-Shellsburg stayed far enough ahead of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers Monday night, June 27, for a doubleheader sweep on the baseball diamond.
The losses dropped the Clipper boys to 6-16 overall and 6-13 in the WaMaC.
The Vikings won the opener 11-7 with a pair of runs in the top of the first, two more in the third, three in the fifth and sixth, and one in the seventh. The Clippers put up one run each in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings; had two in the sixth, and one in the seventh.

OXFORD — The seventh-ranked Solon Lady Spartans handed the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers their second loss of the season with a 10-6 effort on the Clippers’ home diamond last Thursday night.
The CCA JV picked up a 7-2 win, featuring a homer by Maddy Beckler, to open the hot and humid night. The Clippers started sweating early as Solon put up a run in the top of the first inning and added four more in the second. Clipper defense held the Lady Spartans scoreless in the third, fourth and fifth innings; but suffered through a four-run sixth. Solon’s final run came in the seventh.
