Not too hot to read a book

Check out a stack of books, pull up a comfy chair– in the library or at home, and lose yourself in a book until the hot weather passes. There has been a lot of television exposure lately about Jaycee Dugard, the young girl who was kidnapped and held captive for 18 years. “A Stolen Life” by Jaycee Dugard is told with unflinching detail. It is difficult to read, although beautifully written. Much of the book is taken from her actual journal written while in her backyard prison.


Lake Macbride plans healthy events for check passing

LAKE MACBRIDE– Park officials hope a variety of outdoor attractions keep friends of Lake Macbride State Park active and aware of healthy choices as they celebrate a $10,000 grant to be used for fitness and activity improvements next week.
That cash award, from Coca-Cola, comes with the park in active contention for top honors in Coca-Cola’s 2011 America Is Your Park award. The designation will be highlighted at the park Wednesday, Aug. 3, with outdoor features ranging from fun games with healthy food choices to an exhibit of area birds of prey… and delivery of that $10,000 check.


School board considers dropping IASB membership

SOLON– The Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) sent membership dues requests and a letter to school boards asking each district to name up to five goals that will be critical to school districts and taxpayers in preparation for the 2011-2012 school year.
The goals should be returned on a form, which has background information.
Helping to close the information is a sentence that reads, “The grassroots IASB legislative process involves all school districts in Iowa.”


Solon council to consider Candy Store

SOLON– For years, the commercial property known as the Candy Store sat vacant.
The two-story building (also referred to as the Kramer building, for its previous owner) located at 100 W. Main St. is now listed for sale, and the members of the Solon City Council are going to take a look.
Council members are still knee-deep in their consideration of the possible purchase of the Brosh Chapel and Community Center as a site for a new city hall, but the new listing will now get some attention as well.


Solon youth football camp to be held Aug. 1-4

SOLON– The 2011 Spartan Youth Football Camp for students entering second through eighth grade will be held Aug. 1-4 at the Spartan practice field located behind the high school. Second through fifth-graders will attend from 9-10:30 a.m., and sixth through eighth-graders will attend from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The fee is $55, with checks payable to Solon Football.
This camp will allow each camper to learn and apply the various skills and techniques applicable to football.


Solon Volleyball Camp served up Aug. 1-9

SOLON– Students in grades 6th through 12th are invited to participate in the Solon Volleyball Camp.
For those entering or currently in high school (9th-12th grades), camp runs August 1-4 from 6-9 p.m. at the Solon High School. Cost for this age level is $45 and includes a camp T-shirt.
For those entering 6th grade through 8th grade, camp runs August 8-9 from 7:30-9 p.m. at Solon High School. Cost for this age level is $25 and includes a camp T-shirt.

Eastern Iowa Brass Band celebrates anniversary with free concert Aug. 7

SOLON– The Eastern Iowa Brass Band will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a special concert on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 3 p.m. in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church’s social hall in Solon. The band will be playing members’ favorite pieces from years past, conducted by Mr. Joshua Thompson. Band alumni will be special guests at the event and are encouraged to contact a band member or send an email to alumni@easterniowabrassband.com if they plan to attend. The concert is free and open to the public.

Hawk Talk

Kelly Krei and Matt Gatens have a lot of things in common.
They both grew up in Iowa City and were Hawkeye fans at a young age.
They went to junior high and high school together. They excelled in two sports and they helped lead City High to state championships in basketball… in the same year.
“It is kind of weird that we both happened to win our senior year,” said Kelly. “It was a great thing for City High and we had some great teammates helping us a lot.”
While Matt was competing in basketball and golf, Kelly was running track and playing basketball.


Loless Walters

Loless “Walt” Walters, 80, of Madison, Ind., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday morning, July 20, 2011, in Madison at King’s Daughters’ Hospital. Funeral services were held July 25 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. He was laid to rest at Clemons Cemetery in Clemons.
