Join North Liberty’s Night at the ballpark Aug. 5

CEDAR RAPIDS– The entire town of North Liberty is invited to the ball park. It’s North Liberty’s Night with the Kernels on Aug. 5. Game time is 6:35 p.m. and there will be fireworks after the game. The fee is $7 per person for game ticket only, and just $9 to purchase a ticket and transportation to the game. North Liberty Recreation Department will provide transportation for at least 40 adults.
Hurry, registration ends July 27.

Celebrate Double Dollar Days at North Liberty pool

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Recreation Department wants to help you celebrate the summer months for only $2, on Aug. 6 and 7, and Sept. 3 and 4, during regular pool hours.
Enjoy the different outdoor pool amenities such as two large slides, mushroom spray features, two diving boards, and more.
The outdoor pool is open weekdays from 12–8 p.m. through August 22, and on weekends from 12–6 p.m. Beginning August 23, the pool will operate during limited hours, from 4–8 p.m. weekdays, and 12–6 p.m. on weekends.
The outdoor pool closes for the season on Monday, Sept. 6.

NL Pantry Thanksgiving in July food drive

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry will be conducting a Thanksgiving in July community-wide food drive.
All the food collected in North Liberty goes to the North Liberty Community Pantry. Drop off food or financial donations at these participating financial institution during the entire month of July. The financial institution that collects the most pounds wins the Traveling Turkey Trophy to display throughout 2011.

Upcoming road and trail detours in NL

NORTH LIBERTY– As of July 14, the bike trail from Forevergreen Road to Zeller Street will be closed and detour along Front Street. This closure is estimated to last two weeks, depending on weather. This will allow for construction of the Golfview Drive extension.
This past weekend, eastbound traffic on Penn Street was detoured through Community Drive to Highway 965 to allow adequate space to pour concrete up to the southwest corner of the construction area.
Street Superintendent Don Colony said if weather cooperates, the widening part should be done by early this week. 

North Liberty to receive $1.125 million

NORTH LIBERTY– Every little bit helps.
$1.125 million helps a lot.
That is the amount of funding approved by the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPOJC) Urbanized Area Policy Board to be distributed to North Liberty for improvements to Highway 965 at its intersection with Scales Bend Road.

Cruis’n for Kids Car Show July 23

IOWA CITY– The fourth annual Cruis’n for the Kids Car Show will host over 150 classic and vintage cars from all around Iowa. The cars will be on display Saturday, July 23, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at The University of Iowa Kinnick Football Stadium Krause Family Plaza, Iowa City.

Spartans eye return trip

SOLON– The Spartans powered into the postseason last week, aiming for a return to the State Baseball Tournament in Des Moines and a possible repeat as champions.
But there are still a few obstacles in the way.
The Solon varsity baseball squad scored 32 runs in a doubleheader win Wednesday against Center Point-Urbana (CPU) to close out the regular season and then started off the second season with a 6-0 win over Mt. Vernon Friday night.

SOLON– It’s back to Ft. Dodge for the Lady Spartans.
Solon’s varsity softball team won a berth in the 2011 State Softball Tournament last week with wins over Marion and Mt. Vernon in regional postseason play.
The Lady Spartans (34-7) are scheduled to face Winterset (30-10) in the first round of the state tournament Tuesday, July 19 (subsequent to the publication of this edition), at Rogers Park in Ft. Dodge.
If Solon wins, the Lady Spartans advance to a Thursday semifinal at 3:30 p.m. Thursday; a loss sends them to the consolation bracket Wednesday at 12 p.m.
