SOLON– The Solon Athletic Booster Club will host the annual Fall Activities Kickoff on Friday, Aug. 19, at the Solon football field. Coaches, athletes, parents, families and friends are invited to attend. Participants involved in this year’s fall activities will be introduced, followed by a football scrimmage. Introductions begin at 6:15 p.m., with the scrimmage set for 7 p.m. Brown Bag specials served at the concession stand starting @ 5:30 p.m.

SOLON– Three candidates have filed to run for the Solon Community School District (SCSD) Board of Education.
On the SCSD ticket for the September school board election will be incumbent Dean Martin, along with Dan Coons and Jeremiah Sinnwell. ThoseThe candidates will be running to fill two at-large seats for the expiring terms of current board members Martin and Tim Brown. Newly elected board members will serve for four years. Terms for remaining board members Dave Asprey, Lianne Westcot and Dick Schwab all expire in 2013.

Friday, Aug. 5, was Hawkeye football media day, so the next three weeks I’ll be talking about the offense, the defense and special teams.
This week… the offense, including quarterback, offensive line, tight end and wide receiver.

It all starts with the quarterback. It’s not easy to replace a three-year starter like Rick Stanzi.
All Rick did was finish with a 26-9 record and become only the third quarterback in Big Ten history to win three straight bowl games.

Leonard Joseph Reyman, 86, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011. Services were held Aug. 11 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with the Rev. Julie Schuett presiding. Burial followed in Anderson Cemetery, Swisher.
