Summer Reading Program recap
“I have been really happy with the Summer Reading Program this year.  ‘One World, Many Stories’ was a great theme to work with and it was a lot of fun to ‘travel around the world’ with so many of the patrons. There have been wonderful turnouts for the programs and we have had so many reading logs turned in!”  This is the summation of the past busy six weeks at the library according to Jen Leveck, Youth Services Librarian. “I also love to see how empty the shelves start to look in the summertime.” 


Eastern Iowa Brass Band free anniversary concert Aug. 7

SOLON– The Eastern Iowa Brass Band will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a special concert on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 3 p.m. in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church’s social hall in Solon. The band will be playing members’ favorite pieces from years past, conducted by Mr. Joshua Thompson. Band alumni will be special guests at the event and are encouraged to contact a band member or send an email to alumni@easterniowabrassband.com if they plan to attend. The concert is free and open to the public.

Solon Public Library anniversary celebration offers special events

SOLON– The Solon Public Library will be hosting a series of special events the week of Aug. 14-21 in honor of the library building’s 10th anniversary.
On Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 6:30 p.m. Annie Wilcox, a speaker from Barnes & Noble, will discuss “What’s New?” in the literary world. Topics will cover new releases, books you might be interested in that are not on the “Best Seller List”, books from Iowa authors and just fun reads.


Solon Retirement Village seeks TIF assistance from city

SOLON– The city is willing to sign away five years of revenue, but not 10.
At least that was the impression given after the Solon Retirement Village made application for 10 years of property tax reimbursement for the new Alzheimer’s and skilled nursing additions which are currently under construction.
At a July 19 city council meeting, Solon Retirement Village made formal application for Tax Increment Finance (TIF) assistance, seeking to have property taxes generated by the $2.9 million project reimbursed on a gradual scale over 10 years.


Solon council: Main Street site too costly

SOLON– It took only a week for the members of the Solon City Council to decide against pursuing a recently-available Main Street location.
After independently visiting the location, 100 W. Main St., and having the city engineer and building inspector do the same, council members determined renovation costs and other concerns have ruled out the building known as the “Candy Store” as a possible city hall site.
After learning that estimated renovation costs could be as high as a half-million dollars, council members decided during a special session last week they would pass on the property.

James Welsh

James Vincent Welsh, 84, of Williamsburg, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2011, surrounded by his children, from kidney failure at Marengo Memorial Hospital. He had been ill for several months. Funeral mass was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg July 28, with burial following at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Holbrook.


Kathleen “Kathy” Rios

Kathleen “Kathy” Rios, 62, of Solon, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at UIHC following a brief illness.
Funeral Services were Monday, Aug. 1, at Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin with Rev. Bev. Marshall-Goodell officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tiffin. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
Kathy was born Dec. 31, 1948, in Iowa City, the daughter of Edmund “Ned” and Ada (Bowman) Langenberg. She was a 1967 graduate of Clear Creek High School. On April 6, 1974, Kathy married Henry Rios Jr. in Iowa City.
