Check out a puzzle

Before the holiday schedule bogs you down, check out a puzzle and enjoy a few cool evenings around the table putting together a jigsaw puzzle. All the puzzles in the library collection have been donated. There are several 300-piece puzzles with easy-to-grip pieces which have proved to be popular. If you have one that you no longer want, consider donating it to the library collection. Or, if you’d like to try one, be sure to come and check one out.

• The next time you are in the library, notice the new hummingbird and goldfinch feeders visible from the window in the children’s area. We’ve already seen many beautiful birds and they are so interesting to watch. The hummingbirds have been very plentiful. Be sure and catch a glimpse of them before they migrate.


Solon recreation league soccer team photos Sept. 22

SOLON– Picture Day for Solon Parks and Recreation soccer will be Thursday, Sept. 22. Halverson Photography will be taking team photos that day– teams are reminded to bring their shirts. The T-shirts have been delivered, so coaches may pick up their team’s shirts before their next game. Shirts may be picked up at the city office with prior notice to Travis.
Please try to remind players to show up approximately 30 minutes before their scheduled game time on Thursday, Sept. 22.


Advocates’ Galena trip Sept. 22 sponsored in part by churches

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates bus trip to Galena is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 22, and is sponsored in part by the Ecumenical Council. The three churches– Solon United Methodist Church, Our Lord’s Church and St. Mary’s Catholic Church– donated the offering from the fall Ecumenical service to the Advocate’s senior trip program.


City prepares to educate the public on $1.35 million city hall bond issue

SOLON– If you have questions about the city’s plan for a new city hall, you should have answers soon.
The Solon City Council met last week in a special session to discuss the promotion and potential repayment of a $1.35 million bond issue, which will appear on the Nov. 8 general election ballot.
Council members approved the language for the bond issue during the Sept. 14 meeting, and also decided on a 65/35 split for repaying the 12-year bond through Tax Increment Finance (TIF) money and the city’s debt service levy.


Dan Coons, Dean Martin selected by Solon school district voters

SOLON– When the Solon Community School District’s Board of Education met Monday night (Sept. 19), two newly-elected board members were expected to take their seats.
Dan Coons and incumbent Dean Martin were elected to seats on the local school board as part of the Tuesday, Sept. 13, elections.
Additionally, Solon district voters approved a new Revenue Purpose Statement authorizing the expenditure of future revenue generated by the statewide Secure an Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) one percent sales tax.

TIFFIN– It took a little time to get rolling.
After a shaky end to Solon’s first drive, the Spartans put up four touchdowns in the first half to spoil Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Homecoming Friday night, 38-9.
Solon had marched all the way to the CCA 1-yard line in its opening possession, but a holding penalty negated a touchdown, a snap sailed over the head of Solon quarterback J. J. Hanus, and he was subsequently sacked for a 7-yard loss.
Josh Proehl, however, was up to the task, and a 41-yard field goal put the Spartans on the scoreboard with a 3-0 lead.


Lady Spartans move to 16-1

SOLON– The Lady Spartans have become an efficient volleyball machine.
Solon ranks high in Class 3A in kills, kill efficiency, serving success and serving efficiency.
Last week was a light one for the Solon varsity volleyball squad, but the rest of September has been busy.
The Lady Spartans dusted off Western Dubuque last Tuesday, 25-7, 25-18, 25-15 to move to 16-1 on the season, their sole loss coming at the hands of No. 10 4A Dubuque Hempstead at the Linn-Mar tournament Sept. 10.


Keeping farm families alive and well

IOWA CITY– According to the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH), agriculture is one of the nation’s most hazardous occupations. On average, 550 farmers die in agriculture related incidents every year. One-hundred kids, on average, are also killed on the farm. In Iowa, approximately 30 deaths per year occur, with three to four of those being children.
Obvious dangers include machinery, livestock and chemical exposure. However, death also comes from chronic conditions built up over time.
Roger Stutsman of Hills knows the dangers all too well.
