JOHNSON COUNTY- Facing continued increases in Iowa’s aging population, legislators earlier this year tasked the Iowa Department of Aging (IDA) with developing a plan to consolidate elder service providers that contract with the state.
The state law mandates the reduction of aging agencies in the state. Aging agencies were started as part of the federal Older Americans Act in 1965.
Currently, 13 Area Aging Agencies (AAAs) serve elder populations in Iowa. An IDA proposal shows six agencies standing by the legislative deadline July 1, 2012.

With the iPad2, you can not only read Internet content, check email, and create spreadsheets or presentations for work, you can also karaoke with your favorite Glee characters, lay waste to thieving pigs who steal eggs from Angry Birds, jam the roundball with the likes of Scottie Pippin or Karl Malone, and shoot soccer balls at cartoon zombies in your spare time.
The Pope even used an iPad to send his first-ever tweet.

JOHNSON COUNTY– Fall is a great time for the entire family to go natural.
Join Johnson County Heritage Trust members for the organization’s second annual Family Day at Belgum Grove, Sunday, Sept. 18, from 1-3 p.m.
Move through five different learning stations and experience fun, hands-on activities designed to teach about natural prairies, streams, ponds and woodlands. Explore the creek, stroll through the orchard, and enjoy the wildlife and all the beauty these natural areas have to offer.


Where’s the beef?

IOWA CITY– When Johnson County Supervisor Pat Harney sat in on a local forum about hunger, he learned about food shortages at local food banks and came up with an idea to beef up support to those in need.
Along with his wife Jean, Harney rounded up the assistance of 20 donors from all over the county to help in a significant way. Harney and company bought a two-year-old heifer raised by Clear Creek Amana graduate Stephanie Fisher. Fisher’s cow was a reserve champion at the county fair; weighing in at 1,045 pounds. It sold for $1,200.

SOLON– Now that’s trust.
Up by a single touchdown and facing fourth down and 13 from their own 17-yard line, the Solon Spartans attempted a fake punt. Junior Rory Siddell took the snap and mailed a pass 25 yards to senior Cody Fritz.
Fritz leapt high, curling his body backward and extending his right arm. It was just a few inches too high.
The visiting Benton Community Bobcats now had the ball deep in Solon territory, and moments later were at the Solon 7 with first down and goal to go.
The Solon defense, however, had earned the confidence displayed by their coaches.


Spartan Fund Run Sept. 17

The annual Spartan Fund Run will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, starting at the high school at 8-8:30 a.m. Entry forms will be available online. Proceeds are donated to the Solon teachers for learning supplies. Please join the fun!

Registration OVERDUE

If you have not registered your children for school this fall, please complete the process immediately. All families are to use the E-Registration. Please contact the school if you need your students’ Access IDs and Passwords and RevTrak ID for payment. Families who have not paid the school fees must contact Central Office, 624-3401 ext. 1349 to set up a payment plan. Failure to do so may result in the account being turned over to small claims court.
