SIAC: School Improvement Advisory Committee members needed

Solon Community School District parents and community members are invited to complete an application for membership on the School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC).  SIAC is a board-appointed committee that shall include students, parents, teachers, administrators, and representatives from the local community.  To the extent possible, committee membership shall have balanced representation of the following: race, gender, national origin, and disability.  Beginning in the 2011-12 school year, this committee must include equal representatives of both genders.  SIAC makes recommendations to t

New best selling books

Local best-sellers are listed in the Sunday paper and several of those listed have arrived on the library shelves this week. The number one book in eastern Iowa this week, “The Sacred Acre: The Ed Thomas Story,” by Mark Tabb is a title all will recognize. Ed Thomas was 58 years old and helping his community recover from a tornado when he was gunned down by one of his former students while working with a group of Parkersburg football and volleyball players. The murder of this hometown hero shocked the nation. Ed’s family and community reeled from the shock.


Spooky story, pictures

Don’t overlook this spooky debut novel because it is cataloged in the YA (Young Adult) section. “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” by Ransom Riggs has already been snapped up by Twentieth Century Fox for movie adaptation. Sixteen-year old Jacob witnessed his grandfather’s horrifying death and decided to journey to a small Welsh island to see if the stories about his growing up were actually true. Grandfather claims to have been raised in an orphanage populated by children with powers like invisibility and levitation.


September Storytime

Miss Jen is ready to welcome a new group of preschoolers to Storytime this month as a lot of her previous listeners have moved on to kindergarten. Storytime is open to ages 2 through 5 years old, their caregivers and siblings. Storytime meets every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the big meeting room at the library. One of Miss Jen’s helpers will be reading on Sept. 20, with oceans being the theme. The Sept. 27 theme will be dinosaurs. There are lots of dinosaurs that live in the basement of the library. They were outside for the library birthday party.


One Community, One Book

One Community, One Book: All Johnson County Reads is a community-wide reading project that annually runs from the middle of September through the middle of November. The book is selected by a committee and is announced in the spring preceding the reading project. The book selected for 2011 is “Zeitoun” by Dave Eggers. “Zeitoun” is the true story of one family caught between America’s two biggest policy disasters: the war on terror and the response to Hurricane Katrina. Zeitoun, of Syrian decent, and his wife Kathy have a painting business.


Book club is Tuesday

The book club will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m. The book club is open to any interested adult readers. If you have any questions about the book club, email Joyce Barta at jebarta@southslope.net. The selection for September is “Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon. Claire Randall, a young combat nurse in World War II, is the main character. It’s the first in a series, so once you’ve devoured this one, you’ll want to have the next three books handy.


New Teen Advisory Board

The Solon Public Library is looking for seventh-12th graders to serve on the NEW Teen Advisory Board (TAB). Teen board members will share ideas and work together to make the Solon Public Library a great place for teens, have fun and help create teen programs and recommend Young Adult materials (books and movies). Applications are available online and at the library. Applications are due by Sept. 30. Meetings will be held once a month.


Bonding, moving costs added to city hall issue

SOLON– It will take one more meeting to nail it down.
The members of the Solon City Council will hold a special session Wednesday, Sept. 14, to finish up the details on ballot language and repayment of a $1.35 million bond issue to purchase a new city hall.
Council members were expected to approve the ballot language at last week’s regular session (Sept. 7), with a decision repayment to be made Sept. 21.
But council members wanted more information to be inserted into the language, and council member Steve Stange called for a special session to wrap up all the loose ends.
